Sick of the Abuse!

Yeah, I think that's the way to go. You can't vote on a story unless you are logged in, which leaves out all the readers who read, but judging by the extremely low percentage of hits versus votes, not many readers vote any way.

I think most of the votes, at least from my perspective, are from those who bash what I write.

I've have always written that this could be a much better site. It's time we writers took more control of it and demanded what we want from management. No one wants to spend hours, days, and weeks writing a story only to see it bashed by some unknown anonymous asshole.

I've given up trying to work out the rationale behind hits, votes and what people like or don't like.

If you think it's a good story, and some people enjoy reading it, so what if you get the odd bashing comment/vote? If it really matters that much to you, why not remove all your stories and post them elsewhere?

Way I see it, is if one or two people get a good wank out of my stories, I'm happy. I don't really care if 90% of the other people who hit my page aren't interested enough to read on, or if they do read on, don't vote a 4 or 5.

I just look at the "views" tally. Taking into account that some of these are a clickout rather than a full read, I consider whether the number of reads is worth the effort I've put into posting a story that I wrote because I was compeled to write it anyway--and enjoyed doing so. So far, the view count at Lit. has shown the writing to be worthwhile. If the comments and voting bothered me all that much, I'd simple turn them off.

You do that. Go demand what you want.

Let us know how that works out for you.

One squeaky wheel won't make as much noise as a thousand complaining writers. Are you volunteering your voice in a committed effort to make for a better site?

Alas, if it was only the "odd bashing comment" that I receive, none of this would bother me. Most of my comments are bashing comments.

I still say that this site could and should be a better site for writers. If we writers were given better treatment in management policing those who abuse this site, more writers would want to write and would make the effore to write better stories here.

Basically, much like you, I write for myself. This site gives me a reason to write. The hits, votes, and comments are more of an aside than anything else. Only, we all want to feel good about what we write. We all want to be embraced instead of bashed.

I still feel that if readers had to sign in to vote and/or to comment, bashing would no longer be an issue.

I don't understand why we all my sign in to post a comment on the forum boards but the writers who write here aren't given the respect to protect ourselves against those readers who are only here to start trouble.

Y'know, been here for several years, had a personal goal of submitting 200 stories, nearly there too but no longer see the need.

Why this site allows ANONYMOUS to piss all over us writers is beyond me.

It's this site's loss in my opinion.

Respond if u care to but I won''t be back.

Piss all over each other for all I care.

In another life.

If you do come back, here is a question for you. If there was not such person as anonymous on Lit, and people said the same things they are obviously saying to you, would it make a difference?

I'd find the assertion that you only write for personal enjoyment easier to swallow if you had any works posted here since you didn't win the survivor's contest for the second year of busting a gut trying to. You certainly leave the impression you write for something else much more than for personal enjoyment. Even your obsession with bashing bears that out. (As will the diatribe that follows this, I'm sure.)

Freddie, you may or may not have me on ignore, if you do, then this fell on "deaf ears":

....were you aware you could turn off anonymous feedback?

...

Go to your Literotica Control Panel (the same area where you'd submit your stories)

Click on Options.

Click the circle (radio button) beside "No" for "Allow anonymous feedback?"

Click the Save Changes button.

Now, anyone who wants to comment on your stories or send you private feedback has to supply a user name (for public feedback) and email (for private feedback). Yes, this applies to stories already posted as well (I just checked for myself.)

I've never understood why you must log in to make a comment on the forum board but don't have to log in to make a comment to a story. If readers had to log in, there'd be less bullshit that happens on this site. Too many people are brave when hiding behind their anonymity.

I'd like to see a rule change where is a reader wants to make a comment on a writer's story, they must join the site and log in who they are. Otherwise, if they don't want to join, they can still read the story and they can still vote.

I don't get it. I don't understand why this site is like this. I feel as though the ownership cares more about the rights of the readers than she does the feelings of the writers.

Maybe someone can enlighten me.

So it is possible to stop anonymous feedback. The writer has complete control over that. And as I said, it applies to stories already posted as well as any not yet posted.

so go if your skins that thin...

Dear Mr AsylumSeeker,

Reading your bio page I see you’ve submitted some 190+ stories. That you’re ex-military. A tough guy. An adult educator. That most of your stories have red H’s. I also noted that you’re the chosen FAVORITE of some 485 readers (#33 on the FAVORITES list). How bad is that?

So what the fucks your problem? Do you know what a red H signifies?

It means that at least eight out of ten (and probably nine) readers gave you a perfect score! Can you believe that? Does this sound as if you’re getting pissed on?

And quickly looking through the comments on some of your stories I found that ninety percent of them were positive.

You know AS I’ve never seen anyone complain when ANONYMOUS gushes about somebody’s story.

And a recent manuian study found that fully 87% of posted comments on this site were complimentary.

So get over it! Stop the whining!

Dear Freddie :D,

You know I love you man but this is one area where I’ll never agree with you.

You want to be enlightened? Alright I’ll enlighten you. There’s two very good reasons why ‘anonymous’ is allowed to comment.

First off, as has been noted on this very thread, we’d don’t receive very many comments as it is now. Any further restrictions would reduce the trickle to virtually none.

Second, most LITEROTICANS will not give an honest comment if they have to sign their own name. So to get rid of a very few bashers who troll the site you’ll lose the honest criticisms so many anonymous comments contain.

I’d suggest the two of you simply turn off all comments if you’re not willing to face your critics. “If you can’t stand the heat…”

I’m james r scouries and I humbly accept all comments…

If you are confident in your writing and feel good about it, you will never need others to tell you it's good.

Yes, I agree, but we all need as much a pat on the back as we sometimes need a kick in the ass. We are all human, after all.

To throw statistics back at you, 9 out of 10 anonymous posters are bashers and not helpful critics.

Moreover, I've written two reviews imploring readers to vote and comment more. Those reviews were overwhelmed with votes and comments, but then everything returned to the way that it was before with a comment for every 1,000 hits and a vote for every 500 hits.

You can't get people to vote in national elections, what makes a writer think that a reader will vote for his or her story?

I'm sure there are lots of reasons why readers don't vote and comment, but none of those reasons make it right or help placate the writer who has gone through so much trouble to write the story.

Everything on this site is catered to for the reader and not for the writer. I feel used and abused. I feel so unimportant and the only time that I feel good about what I do is when I'm writing and creating the story, before I post it. Then, there's always that feeling of disappointment when the story is ill received. It's a high that immediately follows with a low.

And you know that you feel the same way as I do, Jim, otherwise you wouldn't be here creating your masterpieces of incest. You love counting votes, hits, and comments more than anyone. You've made a business out of it.

Sorry, but the "I'm so many other posters" doesn't mean anything. For whatever name you post under, that's the sum total of what you get credit for in posts by the name.

You want to discuss the stories you have under another name, post your discussion under that name.

To throw statistics back at you, 9 out of 10 anonymous posters are bashers and not helpful critics.

Nope, not on my stories. The last anonymous poster on my stories wants to have my baby. Nearly all of my anonymous comments are very flattering. Of course my main genre posted on Lit. doesn't get many comments at all.

Yeah, so that name and those stories will serve the same fate as the stories of Bostonfictionwriter? I don't think so. Suffice to say, that my "other" stories and my "other" identities are doing just fine where they are.

That's irrelevant to whether you can believably lump stories under all your alts together in bragging threads. You can't. Writing stories under an alt, though, is a good reason to escape scum bags who vote/comment on the basis of forum postings, yes.

You just can't mix the apples in with the oranges on this.

Yes but...wouldn't it be nicer if everyone had to sign in to vote and comment? I rather like the idea of knowing who is making comments to my story so that I can thank them.

But that's the whole point of turning off anonymous comments. If someone wants to comment on a story, he/she needs to have a user ID signed out. If they prefer to remain anonymous, they can't comment on an author's story who has anonymous feedback disabled.

I think forcing everyone to sign out an ID is silly. There are a few sites similar to Lit that require a user name in order for you to read stories. I'd be willing to bet readership is much lower there.

I'm sorry, it doesn't go the "they're picking on me" whine, so don't count on BFW to acknowledge it. Glad you brought it up--I didn't know about this feature (although I don't feel the need to use it--yet). Thanks.

No comment on the "they're picking on me" whine. As far as turning off anonymous comments, I discovered it awhile ago when I was reading a story by one of the authors on my favorites list. I sent her a message and asked how she disabled that particular feature.

I have quite a few people comment anonymously on my stories (and in email) and I wouldn't want to take that away from them. If I get nasty anonymous comments, I simply delete them. Of course that goes back to the whole "they're picking on me" thing that I won't comment on. :D

I didn't write that you needed to sign in to read the story. You need to sign in to vote and/or comment on the story you read.

Excuse me, BFW, but your claim denigrates the truly good writers on this site. Take Dafney DeWitt, for example: Three Green Es out of seven stories. How does that compare with one Green E out of hundreds of stories?

I would be interested in reading your other Green E stories, but, if they're under an alt, how would I know they're actually yours? The fact that you won the lottery and that you're 89 years old makes everything you say suspect, especially since you're 36 in your author's profile.

On the anonymous comments issue, have you and Scouries considered starting your own site? At least that way you could have better control over the presentation of your work, plus you could keep all the money you make from selling free downloads.

Peace brutha
