I'm all in favor of treating professional athletes with disdain and contempt, but in this situation it was uncalled for, and down right inexcusable.

Another case of a badge-heavy cop making a DWB bust...they need to screen these people more closely before they give them the power of life and death.

Ya know, I was raised to believe that certain individuals should be "righteous"....police, military personnel, judges, teachers, and ...and ..and just folks in general.

God, it's so depressing ....it seems as though most folks are just assholes.

I'm actually very impressed with the way the professional athlete apparently handled himself. No insisting on special treatment because of who he was, didn't flip out on the cop even though I probably would have...

I was taught essentially the same thing...respect authority...be polite...do what the nice man says...but as I grew, I determined most people in positions of authority let it go to their heads...and are assholes. Now I just stay the fuck out of their way and mind my own business.

And the cop got put on PAID leave! PAID! What the hell kind of punishment is that? Sure he's not working, but the asshole shouldn't be getting PAID for being suspended because he was an asshole.

Number one: Sal, you know I love you man, but not every pro athlete is an Owens or a Bonds. You classifying someone as worthy of being hassled becasue of their job distresses me greatly.

Number two: with the investigation incomplete, the department is doing the right thing as an employer to place him on PAID leave. The presumption of innocence until guilt is proven applies to the officer.

I am in no way excusing the incredibly poor judgment of the officer.

At the very least, the FIRST time the hospital sent a nurse out should have been the absolute end of the incident.

Okay, I don't disagree with that, but the incident happened 10 daysd ago. They have a video tape, they have witnesses, the Chief of Police was quoted as saying "When we at the command staff reviewed the tape, we were embarrassed, disappointed," Kunkle said. "It's hard to find the right word and still be professional in my role as the police chief. But the behavior was not appropriate."

So WHY is this asshole still on the payroll?

Becasue the department is just as, or more, vulnerable to lawsuits from the officer as they are to lawsuits from the family.

A few weeks pay is by far the better choice to make compared to opening yourself up to liability for a large award.

Governing (which is managing) by emotion (in this case anger & embarrassment) is careless and foolish.
Until the situation is COMPLETELY resolved, the department would be extremely foolish to handle it in any other way.

True, but governing in a timely expeditious manner, so as to prove that they actually give a shit about the "public welfare" should have been completed by now.
