I happened to be in DC this weekend. I was teaching near here, so I asked "The Office" to extend my ticket by a couple days so I could be in DC for the inauguration. It was a pretty startling thing to see. I'll post some pics, but the thing that really struck me was the energy in the crowd. I've never attended any other inauguration--never had any particular interest, and I wouldn't have bothered with this one, except that I was already here and have relatives in the area I could stay with--but from what I remember from TV and news coverage, this one was special.

The crowd was incredibly diverse and upbeat. People were really polite to each other, making room so others could see, stepping aside for people to get on/off the metro, that kind of thing. It was that kind of crowd. At one point, I was standing near the Washington Memorial and heard a woman say, "I can't see anything."

I said, "Wanna sit on my shoulders?"

She said, "Yeah."

So I knelt down and she climbed on. I stood up with this total stranger on my shoulders, and we watched the rest of Obama's speech that way. Other people in the crowd smiled at us, knowing we were strangers.

It was that kind of crowd. The whole day was full of people being courteous and polite, taking care of each other. There was a kind of energy, a kind of optimism in the air, that was great to feel around me, to be a part of.

Even though he says some things I don't like, espouses some positions I disagree with. The energy was palpable.

Sounds like you had a wonderful time. I bet you're glad you stayed around those extra couple of days so you could see it.

I'd give a nickle to change places with the stranger woman.

High above the crowd. Dancing on someone's shoulders.

I bet that was fun.

I have to get to sleep now, folks, unfortunately. I have an early flight back to PDX. But, yes, Batch, I had a good time, Yes, Thor, We're too good at littering, and sigh, well, holy shit, I can only dream about you sitting on my shoulders like that.

*kisses* all around--except Thor, who gets a manly handshake--and I'm off to sleep now. Back home tomorrow...I'll try to be more present again.

Ah but which way were you facing?

Pretty Lady.

I'm glad that worked out for you and that you were able to be there and enjoy the crowd. It doesn't look as crowded in your pictures as it appeared to be from the news. Were the pictures taken fairly early in the day?

Damn she is very pretty.
If you look in the back of some of the other shots you can see how packed it is on most of the mall.

Awsome pics, Perg! Sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime event, and I'm sure that gorgie lady will remember you, hehe.

Well with one porta potty per 5000 people, I'd ask Pereg if he managed to keep the bottom of his shoes clean.

Ha! Sour grapes much? I've yet to hear reports of people pissing and shitting on the streets, but maybe that's cause I don't listen to Rush. And what about all that rioting that was predicted? Where are all the pictures of people stealing tvs?

Vetteman has always had a fascination with scat. I suspect he smiles when someone calls him a shithead.
