Hello, Survivorphiles, and welcome to the 2009 Survivor Literotica Contest. We hope this will be an enjoyable year-long challenge for all of you, regardless of final score. Survivor is above all a great opportunity for authors to challenge themselves and stretch their own limits, encouraging them into writing territory where they wouldn't normally venture.

This year, there will be several changes to the rules. Keep an eye out for them when the Rules & Registration thread is posted (which will be soon.)

Some rules and principles are as in previous years. Submissions made to the Novels and Novellas category must be 7500 words or more. The use of images in the production of which you were not directly involved, either by creating or by being portrayed in them, will make submissions in the Illustrated and Illustrated Poetry categories ineligible for points. All audio stories must be 750 words or more to be eligible for Survivor, and the accompanying text must be an accurate transcript of the submitted audio.

Every year, there are concerns about multichapter stories and about the quality of some submissions. Due to this, there has been a change in the rules considering multi-part stories. As far as quality of submissions go, once again we must remind all contestants that the only quality control in place is Laurel, at the moment of approval of the submissions. If you read a story that cannot be understood, if it doesn't make sense on its own, or if it doesn't correspond, on its own, to the minimum that can be expected for the category it is placed in, please report the story. If you think that any story you read in Literotica is substandard, please report the story. Let Laurel know about it. That's the only way a quality control can be implemented.

Please remember that this thread is for Survivor related discussion. All non-Survivor related discussions/posts will be moved here.

I hope to have the Rules & Registration thread up tomorrow. I know it's a bit later than previous years, but I'm trying to wait for Lauren. I know she had to go out of country for a family emergency. If I haven't heard from her by in the morning, I will go ahead and post it though.

The 2009 Registration thread is up and so is January's immunity thread, so once you register, hop over to the January immunity thread and choose your number if you wish to participate in immunities.

Last year, a list of active (or hopefully active) chain stories was posted for the benefit of the Survivor participants. Since due to the rules change, participants can only post one chapter per chain, but have to do at least three chains to fill the first cap (unless they use an immunity), could an updated list be posted?

I know Lauren and Crim have a lot of work; I wouldn't mind combing through the AH and finding any currently active chains, if they don't have time and people feel this would be helpful. I'm also planning to start a couple chains.

Edited to add: My bad... I have to learn to read update dates at the bottom of posts. I just noticed that Crim updated the chain stories sticky a few days ago. Sorry for being unobservant.

It's not a problem, Karenna. Sometimes we miss possible chains, so if one does get announced, and it doesn't get added to the list, please pm one of us and let us know. :)

I noticed that there's a 7500 word minimum on the novels and novellas and wondered if there's a similar minimum on the stories, or even a maximum. I couldn't see anything saying that but wanted to check :)

Novels/Novellas is a special category. The definition of novel/novella is a longer work, which is why we imposed the word count minimum. However, that only applies to that category. For all other categories, the word limit minimum is 750, which is Literotica's submission rule. I don't think there is a maximum. :)

That's great, I just wanted to check as I have some longer story ideas and then some ideas for shorter ones too. The ideas are buzzing around in my head like crazy already LOL.

I see that Lauren has posted a score card template:

- Are we supposed to copy and paste it into our own score threads? (Yeah, this may be a dumb question, but I'm asking anyway, lol)

- When will we be able to post our 2009 scorecards?

I haven't submitted any yet, but I've got 3 stories ready so far, and a buncha more ideas, so I'm impatient to get started. lol

Thanks :)

Yes, that is the template you will use this year after your scorecard threads have been created. We will post the 2009 scorecard threads after scores for 2008 have been tallied and the 2008 cards have been moved to the archive thread. :)

Ah, okay. That's kinda what I was thinking, but I wanted to make sure. Thanks, Crim :)

i'm a bit confused, so asking for clarification. the template is up for us to look at, but

We will post the 2009 scorecard threads after scores for 2008 have been tallied and the 2008 cards have been moved to the archive thread

means you guys are going to post it for us as per the previous years, right? we aren't posting them ourselves. right?

Our threads will be posted for us. It is up to us to add the template to that thread.

Newbie questions...

Since I am new to Literotica, I have a question concerning the definition of certain categories. Basically, is there a place where all the categories are defined? I know some of them are obvious, but others less clear. For instance Incest/Taboo, what is taboo?

The other thing is that few of my stories fit neatly into a single category. In fact they usually could fit into three or more. Who decides where they fit? Is it the author in terms of where we submit it? Do the approval teams sometimes change the categories (I hate it but Ezine does this to me all the friggin' time)? It would be a real pain to think that you had completed a Level only to discover that one of your stories had been posted in another category.

Thanks for your patience with my ignorance.

that's quite common, well i've had pobs with cross-category in the past.

the one to watch, IMHO, is Loving Wives. don't be fooled by the title! if you feature an alduterous/cuckold theme -

as for the 'taboo' question ... that's a good one.

OK...so follow-up to my earlier question. I found the one sentence blurbs on the main stories page. But it is not always clear. For instance I write for another site that deals with impregnation. Is that a fetish?

Also I know that there is constant questioning regarding the chapters and what does and does not count. I am working on a novel/novella now about a couple who have been chatting on-line for weeks. I am using excepts from those chats to move the story along. But as long as the story was complete enough to be understandable in and of itself, could I write one or more of their chats and submit it to the Letters & Transcripts category? Same thing with the audio, could a taped phone sex conversation between these two characters work? If so, would it only be the one or could follow-up submissions count as long as they were not...To Be Continued?

And am I asking my questions in the right place? Or is there another thread for this?

Yes, impregnation would likely be considered a fetish if that's the main idea of your story. Taboo around here generally means step/in-law relationships.

In this year's contest, the only place you can use chapters is Novels/Novellas and Chain stories. However, you may using recurring characters as long as each story is completely different and makes sense by itself. You can use chats and phone sex for Letters/Transcripts & Audio as long as they aren't the same conversations used for the Novels/Novellas chapters, and again, each story must be completely different even if the same characters are used.

I have a question about multi chapter stories. I understand the new rules, ie. each story has to be a stand alone piece for the purposes of survivor, but my question is -

If i break a story into two or three parts, so that my readers aren't overwhelmed by a multi page story that might be 8 pages long, can i count the story as a WHOLE for the purposes of Survivor? By this I mean, use it as ONE SUBMISSION in say, Erotic Couplings, eg. My Erotic Story Ch 1-3, even though it was submitted in three chapters?

Sorry if somebody has already raised this issue, but I couldn't find the answer when I roamed the thread... :)

- what about if the chapters cross-category?

- what about if the chapters cross-category?

I'm assuming that would make them ineligable for the purposes of Survivor.

In this instance, i'm only asking in reference to longer stories that are split into chapters within the same category to make them more bite-sized, as i often do with my longer ones.
