This morning I started working on the bike again. I replaced the Plug Wires, put the tank back on and fired it up. You guessed it, it's not working correctly again. I'm still missing cylinders. I start grabbing at wires and get shocked again. Not through the wires though, through the boots. Okay I'm a bit annoyed with this. It means I need to replace the boots as well.

AS I shut down the bike I realize I'm smelling gas. When I check this out I can see gas coming from around the edge of #1 Float Bowl. Great, I need a new Gasket too.

Okay in I go to hit the internet. There is a website where I can order things for the bike and get them fairly cheaply as well as quickly. I set up the order and go to the area where I do the payment. It doesn't accept my address, it won't allow me to enter my state. I call customer service and they give me a run around. I'm on the phone for half an hour with them then I get transfered to a number that doesn't answer. When I call back I'm informed that the company has closed for bussiness for the weekend. I'm now getting a bit cranky.

I call the local dealership and they tell me they don't have either the gasket or the Plug Caps. They can special order the caps for me at $8.00 per cap. They can't help me with the gasket though. Then the guy I'm talking with asks me again about the bike. What kind and what year. When I tell him he's quiet for a minute then he tells me to hold on a second. From the sound of it he switched phones and now he's telling me of a place where he thinks I can get what I need. It's a small motorcycle shop a bit south of me. He gives me their number and mentions that he isn't supposed to be doing this.

When I call the shop the guy who answers tells me he can answer questions but he can't arrange for any work as they were getting ready to close. I tell him my dilemna and he starts tapping on his computer.

"You're in luck" he tells me. "I have a couple of those gaskets here in the shop. As for the wires, well hell just bring in the old ones and I'll make you new ones. It'll cost you about two bucks per boot and we charge four dollars a foot for the wire. That sound all right to you?"

I tell him not only did it sound all right but that he was making my day. He chuckled and asked how long I had been working on the bike. When I told him he groaned in sympathy and told me the shop hours and asked me when I would be down. (Unfortunately not until Tuesday.)

Then he tells me that if I get stumped too badly he knows my bike, he has one of his own. Hot Damn, a brain to pick and maybe a mechanic.

So now I have to wait until Tuesday but at least I can get the parts I need. Somehow I don't think either the Bike Parts Place online or the Dealership will be getting much business from me in the future.

No, I wouldn't imagine they would get mine either.

I'm glad to hear that things are finally beginning to turn around for your bike though. It will be even better to hear more riding stories in the future ;)

Your experience is common everywhere these days, but the problem's been around forever. Shops treat people like 'marks.'

My car feels like its moving across a wash-board when I drive. I take it to the shop. I tell the guy to check the wheel bearings. I pick up the car. YOUR TIRE IS NOT ROUND, GET A NEW TIRE. $100 POR FAVOR. I drive home, remove the wheel bearings, and drop them in a can of gas. I strain the gas and see the bottom of the can filled with metal flakes. I buy new bearings, lube them, install them, and ride is smooth again.

I'm hoping this is the turning point. We shall see on Tuesday or Wednesday. Not only do I want to post more about riding, but I want to get back in the saddle again.

Ahhh but James. It's not all shops.

No it's more a mentality with some people. The mentality of lets get all we can for the least amount of effort.
