In the place I live, no one is afraid of the word. Its used by people of all races and when they want to be offensive, have no trouble using it in an offensive manner. Some people get their feeling hurt and others, it doesn't bother them.

The labels that really gets people really get people ready to fight are self righteous and pretentious.
