Sarah Palin

As mentioned earlier in this thread, Palin was governor of a state that collects 50% more tax money from the feds than it pays, while a president runs a country with a huge deficit. Palin never has had to deal with a deficit, although she did take her town from zero debt to 22 million in the hole when she was mayor - and then conveniently left the mess for the next guy to clean up. Come to think of it, perhaps she is qualified to be president, at least compared to the current occupant of the Whitehouse.

However you compare their experience, I have to say that Sarah Palin is more qualified to be VP than Barack Obama is qualified to be pres. You may badmouth the executive experience of Palin, but it vastly outdoes that of Obama.

But her rigid, black and white theocratic view of the world, which seems to only want to put us back into the dinosaur age (where men, apparently, walked with those creatures) far outweighs any inexperience on her part.

And I'm sure there are those who make a ton of money every year who feel the same about Obama's ideas about government and taxes.

I don't think experience is even an issue anymore. McCain's choice made it a moot point. The issues are now... hey! The ISSUES! What a concept!

If, and only if, experience alone is qualification. I have a little experience at a lot of things, but I am proficient at only a few. How many times have you seen someone with experience hired at a job, only to find that he/she doesn't have a fat clue.

Less than 2 years is not enough time to judge her efficacy as a governor. It takes time to evaluate the results of any and all decisions made. We simply don't have that with Palin.

This is why, for me, experience is a non-issue in this campaign, and makes anyone trying to tout any of the candidates as experienced look ridiculous.

Just MHO.

The problem with issues is they are slippery things, with no clear answer. Worse, they don't really engage the emotions, especially the ones that win elections; fear and anger.

The Republicans realize this. So they make things black and white, and in such a manner as to create the most fear and anger.

The Dems try, but they aren't good at it.

"But beware. Anger, fear, aggression. The dark side are they. Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny."

“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

I'm telling you!

"This is the way liberty dies..."

We need to get this video made! :D

Surely we are smart enough around here (despite one thread we've already had to the contrary) to know that the qualifications for president and vice president are exactly the same.

That said, I think both Obama and Pailin have qualifications problems, but I'd give the edge to Obama. And then I'd give him a mile on the basis of ideology and apparent intent.

And as pointed out before (and has been pointed out by one of the Republican's own mouthpieces yesterday) the executive experience of running Alaska is about comparable to that of running a mom and pop store.

Not exactly the same. If we knew that McCain was going to drop dead on January 21 of next year, I would agree with you. However, we don't know anything of the sort, but we do know the VP is in a position to watch and learn. Being President of the Senate and attending government functions is a pretty easy job, and she will be in a position to know everything McCain does and knows and sees.

Obama, on the other hand, would have to step into the presidency on January 20, with no time for any OJT.

ETA: It's actually rather funny. Obama calls McCain an old warhorse who has been in Washington forever, and then chooses a VP who has been around even longer. McCain says Obama is inexperienced, and then chooses a running mate who is almost as inexperienced.

Pretty short sighted of you. Anyone who's been awake the last fifty years knows the president can drop at any given moment--even the youngest one. Therefore, I think it a little dumb not to look at the vice presidential candidates equally.

If executive experience is the only experience that matters, Palin's qualifications also outdoes those of John McCain.

But it's not, so it's an irrelevant argument.

Oh c'mon, lets get real. She's anti-abortion - big deal. So are lots of people, and all its about is whether abortion will be banned in some states while remaining legal in most. That's as far a the thing will ever go. On the goofy creationism thing, she said she would not prohibit a school from teaching "intelligent design" as well as real science. Again, big deal. The library books thing is made up.

Palin has based her political identity on being an opponent of the inbred political establishment, not that social conservative stuff. THAT is the really important issue, and it's why she's a hit with so much of the public, including many regular people who don't agree with her about those issues. They realize those issues are overblown by the hard core righties and lefties, and they rightfully just don't care very much about them. But they do care about the inbred political establishment thing.

But don't you think it a bit funny that now both Republicans on the Republican ticket are running against the Republicans? There's a video running where this is the only point--that they both fought Republicans tooth and nail. If you actually were a Republican, wouldn't you be a bit confused and put off by that?

Look at my last post about the inbred, self-serving political establishment. That's a bipartisan phenomenon. Related to that, to their credit large segments of the GOP grass roots base have been disgusted with their political elite's betrayal of limited government principles that Repubs have pretended to support since the New Deal, and certainly since 1994. So I don't see any contradiction in this.

Yeah I could see why'd you'd have to say that. For me, the Republicans had the upper hand for eight years and they screwed up royally. Ain't voting for any Republicans this time.

Obama is a constitutional law scholar - top guy in his class. I wonder how that compares with Palin's education? Or McCains? (Not that I really care, but some fence-sitters might.)

palin attended five little colleges and eventually got a journalism degree at U of Idaho.

mccain graduated very very low in his class at annapolis. essentially in military science/engineering. some colleagues have said he was a bit of a bookworm in literature.

Let's see - McCain has a poor understanding of military science/engineering, and a hot temper, and he's going to be in charge of the nuclear arsenal of the USA? And Palin has a journalism degree and a belief that God wants us to start wars all over the world? Why am I not reassured by this information?

Oh, come on, Rox. She’s scary.

She’s gonna be Vice President if McCain is elected.

A couple more Con Supremes and RvW is gone. The Cons know that, you know that.

She has said that she believes that men and dinosaurs were present on earth at the same time. And her father was a science teacher—she says they can’t agree on everything. That’s how much influence the fundie churches have had on her. That’s scary.

The LIST of banned books circulated on the internet was false, but there are many credible accounts of her asking about removing books from the library. That’s scary.

You can’t just dismiss these things by declaring them unimportant or false.

How bought we just compromise and substitute Tina Fey in the VP slot? I think that would work better.

There is no certainty that new justices would overturn RVW. They tend to be very leery of reversing earlier decisions. Even if they did, it wouldn't keep states from legalizing abortions.

Can you give a source where she said that men and dinosaurs occupied the Earth simultaneously?

Books are removed from libraries all the time. Sometimes they are worn out and don't get replaced. Sometimes there is a lack of shelf space so less popular volumes are removed. Sometimes they are removed because a lot of people find them offensive, such as "Little Black Sambo." The fact that Sarah Palin has suggested that certain books be removed, if it is a true fact, is irrelevant. Anybody, including you or me, can go to the local library and request that certain books be removed.

This certainly jumps the shark, Rox. Hope you're enjoying whatever you're drinking.

I'm not Rox. What do you find untrue in the above paragraph?
