Too many political threads.

But how many of them are women from the factory? How many are women wannabees?

Fuck the lot of you

*puts hand on Doc's forehead* You feverish, Doc? That's crankier than usual, even for you. Let Dr. Cory prescribe you a glass of lemonade and some Jane Austen; it's hard to be uncivil after a couple of hours of Austen. :)

Your AH colleagues who participate in the politicals are pretty darned good and sophisticated about it.

Oh? Once again, I'd like to be able to bump up all those "sky is falling" and "won't never happen" political threads from the early party nomination campaigns so everyone can see just how brilliant they were with they "never wills" and nomination winner prognostications. Unfortunately all those thread seem to be too old to retrieve.

Eh. Being "good" at political debating in the sense I'm discussing means civil, clever, creative, maybe funny, possibly tough and uncompromising but also gentle where appropriate, thoughtful rather than blindly partisan, serious but not taking yourself too seriously, not petty, and more. It doesn't mean being right, either in one's predictions or views.

I have to admit that I am one of the guilty parties.

I love, love, love a good debate. And I am able to separate my arguments in that arena from my love and adoration for all of you. That, is my father's fault. By the time I was able to complete a coherent sentence, he started us off at the dinner table. Every night, he would make a statement, see who picked up on it, and take the opposing viewpoint. The debate would begin, and my mother, sweet soul that she was, would cringe. She never understood how we could go after each other on some issue and then calmly say "please pass the pie".

I sincerely apologize if anything I have said has created that kind of anxiety in any AH'er.

I get excited during this time every 4 years, but will try to curtail the enthusiam.

Maybe we can reduce the number of threads, or create some sort of sub thread for politics until this election is over. That way, only those who are interested in the debates have to be confronted with them.

Oh, that "good." I've been on the high seas for a week, so I guess it's possible that maybe the AH political yammerers have become all those things you mention just recently. :)

Well, there's still "learning in progress." ;) But compared to anywhere else I've seen on the internet and even most of real life we're fricking prodigies. :D

One good thing... one bad

You have a wonderful way of saying what we all feel....America is a great country and we are lucky to live and work here and we can vote for whoever we want to...and we will...

This is one of the ways that all the politicking is annoying. Superciliious remarks. This is the World Wide Web.

The good thing: no-one's quoted or replied to a particular individual, so far.

I would enjoy the heck out of it if the Brits had a highly contentious political battle and were going at it like cats and dogs here. The "problem" (really just the reality) is that we yanks outnumber everyone else combined here. I usually try to be a little senstitive about it, but seeing as how our political "superbowl" (coppa mondial) is underway I'm not so much just in this season.

But we are the world.

We have a national sports competition which we refer to as "The World Series".

We had a song by a group called U.S.A. for Africa titled, "We Are The World".

I think what you're trying to say is that we've been insular and self-centered for a long time. :)

On America's Got Talent, David Hasselhoff said, "...and that's as American as the Olympics."

But then again, this is a man who rolled around drunk on the floor searching for a hamburger... how can he be representative of... oh, wait...

I guess we have an entirely different circle of political discussants then. (Of course many of mine are inside the Beltway). Most I read here are really, really politically naive and some seem completely unable to deal with complex circumstances and realities--and certainly have never heard of the concept of balanced perspective. (Seems a pity in that vein that a porn writing board can't just happily be left to be a porn and writing board.)

The longer I've been out of Washington, the more I don't understand the nuances of what's going on either. (When I was a bureacrat protecting a budget and having responsibilities to deliver on, I had to keep track of that for mere survival.) I try not to yak a lot about what I no longer can keep track of, though (other than pricking the balloons of the hilariously off-the-wall). Doesn't stop a lot of folks here--especially the many who never quite understood any of it to begin with. But most of those are harmlessly out of the way except on election day (which brings us to why Bush got one, let alone two, terms).

Here's the point: There is lots of sophisticated political discussion online, mostly on blog sites like Kos or Redstate where people who agree with one another talk to one another. There are very few places where people who disagree butt heads, and most of the time it's not pretty and it's not sophisticated.

What we've got here is a Lake Woebegone class of above average people, as seen in the fact that they are mostly all writers. The fact that it's a porn board raises the tone in that we don't have simplistic religious nutcakes judging everything and one based on Leviticus strictures.

It's really quite special, an oasis and a wonderful opportunity for all of us to learn and grow by butting heads civilly with people who disagree with us.

Oh, you think the "regulars" on AH are "mostly all writers"? I doubt that. Oh, you mean in that they write to the forum. Umm, OK.

Yeah you outnumber everyone else. But also the rest of us know our political BS is really NOT of interest to anyone else and are generally polite enough not to inflict it on everyone.

Oh come on, even if they're not as prolific as you are, most of them have written something on Lit. There are lots of writers who don't write huge volumes of work. Margaret Mitchell wrote one book. I think J.D. Salinger wrote four. Doesn't make them any less a "writer" than Jane Austen or... Isaac Asimov. ;)

"Most" of them have written at least one thing? I'm not so sure even that is true. Other than posts to the forum, of course. (I do see that at least one who really should be restricting himself to the GB anyway was embarrassed into posting a new story last week). No, AH isn't really either for writers or for erotica in the main. I think it's mainly for yakkers who could be yakking on any generic Web site--and about anything but writing or erotica.

Nah - if there were enough of you here to establish a critical mass of politicals they'd be going at it just as much. It would be fun. I'd ignore most of it, but would pop in now and then with some peanut gallery comments.

You guys are making it sound like ethnocentrism is a bad thing.

Most do post stories from what I've seen. Some posters whose stories you can't find post them under alts to keep feedback pure, if you will. And yeah, there's a lot of general yak here, but it's the pron writing that is the common ground. There are other erotica and romance sites and (add your interest here - cars, electronics, clothes, etc) where the same stuff happens - an interest draws and a community grows.

There are now five threads on the front page about the governor of Alaska.

I don't mind discussion about the presumptiove Veep, but I don't want to hop around like a frog in a frying pan to follow them.
