This coming weekend will mark the kick-off to the 2008 college football season. Since the alternate sports choices are NFL exhibition games, baseball and the political conventions, I'm listing some of the more intriguing games that will be on the tube in the Texas area. All listings are subject to my screwing-up.

THURSDAY

Baylor vs Wake Forest (Battlin' Baptists go head-to-head) 7:00 pm FSN

FRIDAY

Rice vs SMU (first game for new SMU h/c June Jones) 7:00 pm ESPN

SATURDAY

LSU vs Appalachian St. (last year's I-A champs and I-AA champs meet in BR) 4:00 pm ESPN

La Tech vs Miss St. (first visit by an SEC team to bucolic Ruston) 5:45 pm ESPN2

Alabama vs Clemson (both nationally ranked) 7:00 pm ABC

Missoure vs Illinois (both nationally ranked) 7:30 pm ESPN

SUNDAY

Kentucky vs Louisville (in-state bragging rights and some sort of trophy) 2:30 pm ESPN

MONDAY

Tenn vs UCLA (the Vols need this one, big time) 7:00 pm ESPN

There are some interesting games that probably won't make it to the tube including Jacksonville St vs Georgia Tech. I'm betting the Yellow Jackets offered I-AA J-St. $200,000 to bus over to Atlanta and play the role of sacrificial lamb BEFORE Ryan Perrilloux (last year's SEC championship game MVP) was kicked off the LSU team and transfered to Jacksonville. Odds are the Jackets will still win, but it could be a very interesting game now, especially if GT turns over the ball a few times while trying to run its new triple-option offense.

Another game worth checking out is Utah vs Michigan. Last year Michigan lost its season operner to I-AA Appalachian St. at Ann Arbor. This year they open, at home again, this time against a Utah club that went 9-4 last year, has 9 starters back on offense and should challenge BYU for the Mt. West title. Wonder what the mood in Ann Arbor would be like if the Wolverines lost two straight home openers?

Memphis vs Mississippi: In theory, the Tigers, who finished strong last season and went to a bowl, should have little trouble with the Rebs, who didn't. But it'll be Houston Nutt's first game as h/c in Oxford so it'll be interesting to see how the team responds to him.

THIS YEAR'S NATIONAL CHAMPION WILL BE:

The nice thing about pre-season picks is no one remembers them when the season ends. Unencumbered as I am by either knowledge or the thought process, here's my pick for this season's national champ.

The winner of the USC/Ohio State game will have a clear shot to one berth in the national title game. Considering the Big Ten's recond in recent years against the PAC-10, home-standing USC should come out ahead.

The other team in the title game will probably be the winner of the Georgia/Florida brawl. Georgia is the pre-season number one team BUT the Bulldogs play a hellacious schedule that includes six ranked teams plus MAC favorite Central Michigan and a Kentucky squad that beat LSU last year. To make matters worse, the Dawgs will come into the game the week after visiting LSU in Baton Rouge.

Florida, on the other hand, has only three ranked teams on its schedule and plays at home the week before meeting Georgia. They also have the Heisman Trophy winner, and more talent than last year's club. Everything else being equal, Florida should win.

The championship: USC vs Florida should be a classic. For no other reason than the two team's strenght at QB, my pick is the Gators.

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI HURRICANES vs. CHARLESTON SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY BUCCANEERS

Date: Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008
Location: Dolphin Stadium - Prescription AthleticTurf (Natural Grass), (74,916) in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Kickoff: 7:37 p.m. (ET)

THIS WEEK'S GAME
The University of Miami will embark upon a new era in its football history when the Hurricanes host the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m., in their first game in their new home - Dolphin Stadium.

Miami won its season opener over Marshall, 31-3, last season, snapping a two-game losing skid in openers. The Hurricanes had won nine straight season openers before falling to rival Florida State in 2005 and 2006.

Head coach Randy Shannon enters his second season at the helm of the Hurricane program. He returns 48 letterwinners including 11 starters. Miami welcomes 33 newcomers. The 2008 signing class ranked No. 1 in the country by ESPN.com.

The Hurricanes return one of the top offensive lines in the country led by offensive tackle Jason Fox. That line combined with running back duo junior Javarris James and sophomore Graig Cooper finished third in rushing in the Atlantic Coast Conference last season. Cooper is the team's leading returning rusher as he gained 682 yards on 125 carries and averaged 5.5 yards per carry. His 682 yards ranked third on the school's all-time true freshman rushing list and fourth nationally in rushing among true freshmen last season. James gained 582 yards on 159 attempts and scored four touchdowns.

Defensively, UM returns junior linebacker Colin McCarthy, who ranked fifth on the team in tackles in 2007. He played in 11 games and tied for the team-lead with 12 tackles for loss while finishing with 74 tackles. Miami's defense gets a boost with the return of senior linebacker Glenn Cook, who missed the 2007 season after starting 11 of 12 games in 2006. Four regular starters return in defensive end Eric Moncur, McCarthy and defensive backs Bruce Johnson and DeMarcus Van Dyke.

DID YOU KNOW?
• Of the 23 seniors on this year's squad, 13 have already earned degrees, while the remaining 10 are all on course to graduate either in December of 2008 or May of 2009.

• Last Spring, the NCAA released its annual Academic Progress Report (APR) and the Hurricane football team scored a 969, the eighth-highest mark out of the 119 Bowl Sub-division football programs. Miami's score - also the third-highest mark in the 12-team Atlantic Coast Conference - put the team in the 80th-90th percentile nationally based on its performance in the classroom.

• Miami will start a freshman quarterback for the first time since 1983. Bernie Kosar started as a redshirt freshman in 1983.

We're #8 in both AP & USA Today rankings. I hope the 'Eers have a kick-ass season now that that leech is no longer coach.

scouries, do you have a larger version of the pic that you use for your AV? I love puffy nipples

The sports team from my geographical region and/or alma mater is vastly superior to the sports team from your geographical region and/or alma mater.

National Champions: 1924, 1929, 1930, 1938, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1953, 1966, 1973, 1977, 1988

* Notre Dame has been voted “national champion” by at least one selector in an additional 9 seasons (1919, 1920, 1927, 1938, 1964, 1967, 1970, 1989).

"Things should be better in 2008 and the Irish could return to elite status as soon as 2009. " - Jimmy Boyd, sports writer

Yea...we had a shitty year last year, oh well :D Doesn't mean we won't trounce a few teams

This reminded me of one of Tom Lehrer's tunes.

Fight fiercely, Harvard,
fight, fight, fight!
Demonstrate to them our skill.
Albeit they possess the might,
Nonetheless we have the will.
How we shall celebrate our victory,
We shall invite the whole team up for tea
(How jolly!)
Hurl that spheroid down the field, and
Fight, fight, fight!

Fight fiercely, Harvard,
fight, fight, fight!
Impress them with our prowess, do!
Oh, fellows, do not let the crimson down,
Be of stout heart and thru.
Come on, chaps, fight for Harvard's glorious name,
Won't it be peachy if we win the game?
(Oh, goody!)
Let's try not to injure them, but
Fight, fight, fight!
And do fight fiercely!
Fight, fight, fight!

ASU

Perennial SEC also-ran Vanderbilt was/is a four-point underdog to Miami (OH) from the MAC. But, the Commodores are leading the Red Hawks 27-10 at half-time.

The final
Wake Forrest 41
Baylor 13

Wow! :nana:
That 23rd ranking might be real :D
Those kids looked sharp! :nana:

SOME FOOTBALL SCORES & STUFF

As a certain Pirate pointed out in a previous post, nationally ranked Wake Forest (23) battered Baylor, handing the Bears a 28 point beating in Waco.

The SEC went 2-0 last night with underdog Vandy whipping Miami of Ohio by 21 points and South Carolina rolling over NC State in the second half.

The most competitive game of the night had Stanford hanging on for a 36-28 win over Oregon State.

And Georgia Tech had no trouble with I-AA Jacksonville St., laying a 41-14 licking on the gang from Gadsden. LSU transfer QB Ryan Perriloux was 22-37 passing for the Gamecocks with four sacks, two interceptions, and two touchdowns. He also lead the team in rushing with 18 carries for 67 yards. (note: that includes the four sacks for -24 yards)

ESPN will carry tonight's Rice/SMU game. Both teams have new head coaches but the attention will be on the Mustangs June Jones.

Most "major" teams seem to like having one decent OFC opponent. Of course, a school might schedule a "quality" opponent only to have it go into the ditch by game time. Florida has former national champs Miami and Florida State plus Hawaii, which played in last year's Sugar Bowl, on its non-conf schedule. None of them is ranked this year.

Meanwhile, Washington, which could use a helping hand, has nationally ranked Oklahoma (4) and BYU (16) plus Notre Dame as its three non-conf opponents. The only upside is all three are home games.

Sept 13
Ohio State at USC

Can't remember a bigger one this early before.
The winner could easily be the National Champ in Jan.

My parents were both rabid Ohio State fans -- my brother attended the University of Miami and graduated from Georgia. I went to Columbia -- not exactly a football powerhouse (although we did kick ass in soccer!)

Anyway -- of the three possibilities I think Ohio State has the best shot. Of course, watching them lose ANOTHER national championship game would be just too painful.

It's been a very cold August here, football is already being played -- the evidence that summer is over is not welcome.

Actually, that game is so early that as long as the loser remains undefeated (and the winner does the same) the rest of the way, they would have a decent shot of getting a rematch in January.

Nero, IMHO, you're right. After all that went down last season, it seems pretty obvious that anything might happen.

From Rivals.com

LSU officials moved up the kickoff of Saturday's season-opener against Appalachian State to 10 a.m. Central time from 4 p.m. after they met with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and his staff Friday morning.

Meanwhile, the Tulane football team will bus to Birmingham, Ala., at 10 a.m. Saturday and will stay all week on the Samford University campus as it prepares for its Sept. 6 opener at Alabama.

The LSU/App. St. game, which originally was scheduled to be on ESPN, now will be aired on ESPN Classic and also shown on ESPN360.com.

Go App State! :D

I'm watching the game on ESPN Classic. It's 31-0 LSU at half-time. No turn-overs and relatively few penalties. App. State is a solid team with a first-rate QB in Edwards but hasn't been able to break a big play.

Bad news, after what they did to Michigan last year they will never surprise anyone again.
Good News, 3 time in a row defending NCAA Div 1 AA Champs with a real shot at a 4peat! :D

Agreed--on both counts. LSU has brought its A-game. They probably should send a thank-you note to Michigan.
