Well... actually maybe only "hits on target" but hey! 1 outa 3 ain't bad!!!

Don't you just love how threads here almost always end up talking about sex?

You would think this was a porn site or something....

George Carlin (may he R.I.P.) did a whole piece on how rockets, bullets, missiles all looked like... well, you know.

My favorite line was this:

"They have bigger dicks than we do? BOMB THEM!"

Puts egos, power and war into perspective a little.

The president of South Ossetia claims mercenaries took part in Georgia’s offensive against the breakaway republic, according to Russia’s RIA news agency. Eduard Kokoity says Ukrainians, people from the Baltics as well as nationals from other countries were involved.

Kokoity said: “After the fighting in the city we found several bodies of citizens of the Baltic states and Ukraine. Later on I was informed that the bodies of several black men were found at the scene of a battle near school number 12".

He also said some corpses had narrow eyes, typical of people of Asian origin.

South Ossetian officials say more than 2,000 of their civilians were killed in the attack. Georgia disputes this figure.

The Russian envoy in South Ossetia, Dmitry Medoyev, says the scene in Tskhinvali is horrific.

“The town looks like Stalingrad during WW2, with fallen trees, power lines, burnt Georgian tanks all over the streets. The dead bodies of Georgian soldiers are lying everywhere,” Medoyev said.

He also confirmed the South Ossetian President’s claim that foreign mercenaries took part in the onslaught.

“In yesterday’s attack, the advancing tanks were supposedly crewed by Ukrainians. Two unidentified bodies found today are said to have black skin. Possibly they are Americans but we can’t say for sure yet. We will be able to publish the official conclusions after carrying out special tests,” Medoyev said.

Well, as noted earlier, "Russia Today" is simply a mouthpiece for Russian propaganda......

The charges are particularly alarming, however. Particularly that there may be "Americans" involved. Hope the kids in the CIA are not being frisky again...

The Moscow Times reported today that the reporter who had filed a single video report for Russia Today from Tblisi confirming the Russian bombing campaign (which has not been reported at all in Russia) had been suddenly fired. No more reports on the bombing have been shown on Russia Today.

The Russian Government will continue to be more and more agressive in Gerogia until the US gets off its ass and does something meaningful. Anything.

Our current strategy seems to be to wait for Finland to arrange a cease fire.
Meanwhile CNN reports "swarms" of 50 Russian jets are cruisng around over Georgia hitting targets of opportunity.

Russian armor is said to be attacking the GEORGIAN city of Gori... but that may be Georgian propaganda..... Who knows?

The response of the US, by any measure, has been vapid and ineffectual.

But Iraq better look out..... we may get so pissed off we will leave and re-invade them!!! Again!!! Maybe we can get them to re-form the Republican guard again... they are our very favorite "Bozo the Knock Down Toy".....

Nobody seems to know what's going on, every report contradicts all other reports.

Assuming that there is american involvement and american CIA involvement based on a report that two of the dead have black skin could be jumping to some bizarre conclusions.

I am confused, mainly because everyone else seems more confused than me.

I'm with you on the Wag The Dog scenario, only Dustin Hoffman could come up with this stuff, while the president is busy in China:

What can the Shrub do?

Most of the U.S. ground forces are mired in Iraq or Afghanistan. Georgia is at the far reach of their air power. The U.S. is not going to risk its navy in the confined waters of the Black Sea.

And, let's face it, after invading Iraq illegally the U.S. has no moral authority to scold other nation's for aggression.

Way to go, Georgie. Your place in the history books is now assured. ;)

Confusing it is.... particularly for George who obviously doesn't know what to do...

Seriously... it IS confusing... and impossible to pick the "good guys" from the "bad"... a lot like the old former Yugoslavia... thing that Clinton had such a hard time tip toeing through... But Bush make's Bill's handling look masterful!

There is just something wrong form the power politics perspective when we seduce this little wanna be nation into our sphere and then leave them hanging.... And if Georgia had been bad (jumping into this on their own)... well we ought to say THAT too!

Great photo.... The girl with the tatoo looks like she is working up to pass gas.... I hope she did......

The biggest problem I have with the situation so far is that the story on Russia Today is vastly different from the story being reported on the world's other news stations.

So who's telling the truth?
Here's how to tell: Look at the Russians - are their lips moving?

(BTW, I like Russians as people, but as a political entity I trust them as far as I can throw a T-62 tank.)

Fair question.... At this point his options are limited..... Last week, however, I thought he REALLY should have flown to Tblisi.....Even better, the week before, if he thought the Gerogians were REALLY going to go into S. Ossetia...

I am confident all the new intelligence apparatus and re-alignment gave him plenty of heads up notice on these impending developments..... So either he ignored them.... OR yet another "OOPS!".

But you know what? It's never too late..... Fly there now! Or better fly Cheney there now! Show a shread of backbone.

And if he gives the military a tough mission... respond to Russian overflights, with our own air cover, for instance.... or brave the Black Sea.... THAT is their job... god bless 'em, I am confident they will do their damndest... The point is to make the Russians blink.

If not, what is the point of having this vaunted military capability??
Where are all the cool planes and ships when you need them??
What have they been spending all this money on??

Suddenly, we ARE afraid of the Russians????

How far we have fallen in a mere 8 years.....

Well, like all bullies, the Shrubbies are afraid of a real fight. Christ! They could actually get hurt instead of a bunch of ragheads and cannon fodder in a far away land. ;)

I don't know.... When did I turn into a hawk?? Where are the hawks around here when you need 'em?????

All of our "shoot 'em where they stand" "hang 'em by their toes" friends???

Damn...... Why is it up to us candy assed, pacifist, motherfuckers to call the fleet out????

Show of hands for anybody that thinks Putin is even mildly intimidated by George??

By the way.... while we are on the subject.... Guess where Putin was yesterday? He LEFT the Olympics.....

Fuck..... Maybe the Russians will let us borrow him for about four months or so..

Sorry, but I don't understand: Does anyone expect the US to actually do something here? Aren't Georgia and South Osettia adjacent to Russia, as in sharing a border? What in God's name did they expect the US to do, and why did they expect that? It would be like expecting Russia to get involved in Idaho's attempt to secede from the USA.

The US has apparently been involved in diplomacy about this region since the 90's, but i think we would have made it clear to the Russians that we wouldn't intervene militarily in terms of troops or aid in a country that was right next to them and a former satellite. In fact, I think this business about transporting Georgian troops back from Iraq is quite a slap in the face. Bush and Rice have badly mishandled relations with Russia what with expanding Nato and basing their "ABM" system in the Czech republic and I think Russia has been looking to stick it to him. That's not why they invaded, but that's partly why they don't give a damn.

The US intervenes in its hemisphere whenever it damn well pleases, as Cant says. As a former superpower who are feeling new Energy strength, the Russians feel they should be able to do the same. They're not afraid of us now and there's really nothing we can do. Any saber-rattling and they'll just put the squeeze on the natural gas that Germany and France live on till they cry Uncle. Russia's the Saudi Arabia of Europe now. It's a whole new ball game.

A better analogy would be the Russians intervening when the Americans invade British Columbia to enable the secession of Kootenay to unite with Idaho.

Just being a stickler.

Hey, George got to play war. Been there, done that. I mean, that's the way it works with an Xbox right? You play the cool war game, get tired of it and move onto Guitar Hero--or, in George's case, "Middle East Hero" as he decided that before he leaves office he wants to accomplish that.

Why should he cut short his time on television at the Olympics and getting close to a lot of women in bikinis just to play am old video game? Besides, as said, he could *lose* this one and George never wants to get involved in anything where he might be on the losing end. He has to always get his way and at least *look* like a winner.

That same argument was true in the former Yugoslavia...

Again, we encourage, supported, seduced Georgia and now are letting them swing in the wind..... AFTER we apparently let them start this fiasco...

It is embarassing......

But why should THAT surprise me?

What a fucking Presidency....

Yeah... Doc... I DO expect the US to do something! Anything!

1. Starting with keeping Georgia on a leash....
2. Playing hardball with the Russians...
3. Just fucking showing up there like Putin did.....

HOW DID THIS HAPPEN???? Who was asleep in Washington??????

Why isn't Cheny there????

We presumably have the world's most powerful military.... USE it! We can put armor and infantry into Tblisi tomorrow......

What the fuck... apparently they are not needed in Iraq anymore! The "surge" worked!!

We can control the airspace in Georgia....

This is power politics of the first degree..... and we are wimping out.....

Do I want a war with Russia?

Of course not..... But guess what? THEY don't want a war with us, either.

The point is to save Georgia's gullible ass.....

And no offense, DOC, but cutting off Europe's gas is so far down the list of implications.... how about every strategic technological industry being cut off from Russia, to say nothing of the dollars and euros..... That sword cuts both ways... Except Russia has far more to lose...... they have NO developed industry... they have OIL and GAS....... Don't buy it.

Appeasing Hitler didn't work either... it just encouraged him.

I am just so pissed off about this crap.....

Fuck... I suggest Europe pull out of NATO.... It is as worthless as our pledged support.

I'm sorry that you have taken such a personal stake in Georgia. It's a long ways away and (insert Doc's entire thesis here). No. We aren't going to mobilize the nation, draft all our expats and start WWIII. Get over it.

Yes, it is a tragedy for the Georgians. But obviously they didn't read the script for the Bay of Pigs. Sorry about that. Certainly the South Ossetians aren't particularly happy about whatever it is that the Georgians represent to them. I don't hear any calls for local referenda on the subject of S. Ossetian sovereignty coming from Georgia, yanno.

You know what? I don't really give a crap about the Georgians.

It's being embarassed at being an American that I give a fuck about.

Why didn't we know what the fuck our "ally" was doing?

Is anybody home in the fucking Department of Defense back there?

Or the fucking Department of State??

Clearly the fucking clown in the White House is utterly useless at accomplishing anything.

As Doc said, Bush has NO foreign policy at all.... He has lost all the credibiltiy we had 8 years ago. He has NO influence on Russia OR fucking Georgia...

He has made this country an interntional joke and I want to know why YOU aren't pissed about it!

Would you believe it's because 'I' am not my country? How about I lived through Johnson's war? That's why I am not pissed about it. The US has lived though greater idiots and bigger criminals and we'll live through this. And just because a bunch of writers are all angry and excited about the current administration doesn't mean squat about what the rest of the world thinks. They, like the non-blogging rest of us are much more concerned about three squares and a roof than what our ruling elite (or their's!) is doing. I'll save my bile for something useful. Or maybe just see which little parts of the planet I can make better, one person helped at a time.

I would not call it a bunch of writers..... just me, it would seem. And while it is not "your" country, I guess I feel it a little more personally..... looking around out here. It feels like "my" country that is being laughed at.

Sorry to disturb you.... go back to sleep. You accepted Johnson/Nixon... no reason not to accept this idiot....

I do think that helping little parts of the planet and one person at a time is worthwhile.... keep it up. You are to be commended for it....

And... as you suggest... I will just have to live with my embarassment.

Now... about fucking midgets... Where do you stand on that?

I don't feel that what I did was 'accept' Kennedy/Johnson/Nixon. I call it 'survived'. :D

As for migets, as I said before. Just so long as she doesn't look like a 12-year-old. I was excused for jury duty once because the case involved alleged child abuse of a sixth grade girl. I stood up and told the judge that I taught sixth grade and neither lawyer wanted anything to do with me. So they sent me home.

I get a little heated on such subjects.

Hold on Keebler, I really don't get this. Was the US really close with Georgia? Were we hinting that we'd stand behind them in a showdown with Russia? Because that's kind of idiotic think to promise them, isn't it? Georgia is Russia's neighbor. There's no way we're going to ship military aid to Russia's neighbor, let alone put troops in there and start a war with Russia itself. Georgia must have known that.

What am I missing here?

Here's how to tell: Look at the Russians - are their lips moving?

(BTW, I like Russians as people, but as a political entity I trust them as far as I can throw a T-62 tank.)

I'm not disagreeing with Roxanne's opinions about Russians, just reminding folks that Joseph Stalin was a Georgian, not a Russian.

As others have pointed out, the Georgian government initiated the present fight. The country's leadership decided to risk military action to regain control of an area that did not want them around. The move has backfired.

IMHO, there are no "good guys" is this sorry mess where, as usual, it's the innocent who are suffering most. However, even if the US played a negative role in the process, no one forced the Georgians to invade or the Russians to make such a brutal response.

Rumple Foreskin
