Proposal for a change in the forum description

I was just looking at the forums front page.

the Author's hangout forum is described thusly;
Have a question for the author of your favorite story? Need some help writing your own story? Ask in here.

Which is, I think, somewhat misleading.

Yes, we talk about writing-- I'd love to see much more talk about writing, and if my brains start working again, I'll start posting more-- but you know, people come here and post questions to writers that don't even exist any longer... Or, as in the most recent thread, honestly expect some kind of clean, professional Q&A setup. That OP is very hurt that he didn't get exactly what he asked for, no more and no less. He feels that if the forum doesn't have an answer it shouldn't post on his thread.

Not only that, but he doesn't see why he ought to do the polite-- please and thank you. Because, the forum description promised that his questions would be answered.

But this is not a professional Q&A board, it's a hangout. And offering help is any user's prerogative, and not anyone's particular duty-- the more so since it's unmoderated and there are no rules to enforce.

If you look at the other forum's descriptions, they all are described as places to converse. GLBT doesn't say; "Ask here how lesbians kiss" and BDSM doesn't say "Find out how to spank your partner here" even though both of those questions can be answered by the users, if they are asked. Visual art promises discussions-- not how- to's. Only the AH has any kind of wording offering anything beyond user's choice.

So, I'd like to ask Laurel and Manu to make a subtle change to the AH description.

Something along the lines of;

A place for writers to talk shop.

(Edited to add)

A place for writers and readers to socialise and discuss the craft of writing

Wanna discuss this idea?

Shop? Like power tools and woodworking? ;)

Your change sounds good to me.

Works for me.

Not only that, but he doesn't see why he ought to do the polite-- please and thank you. Because, the forum description promised that his questions would be answered.

um....what? Who said that basic manners are no longer necessary? I'll be damned if I answer someone's demands for information, which is pretty much what it boils down to if one feels that he's been "promised" something, and he doesn't have to be polite about it.

Fuck that.

Sounds like a very good idea Stella.

If Laurel and Manu want to set up a separate section for asking questions, that would be good too.
The BDSM boards have a serious section and a chat section. It wouldn't matter that it's not full of chatter. It could be like the Story Discussion Board - firmly moderated so only serious writing discussion was allowed.

Can't really have anything to do with a writers only thing...cause well I don't write >.> I'd go for more of a "Place for authors and friends to hang out and chill" or something like that.

You write threads and posts in the Authors Hangout. That's writing.

All writing is writing.

Stella, i agree that the description is a little limiting. When i arrived at the AH, I had a question for my favorite author (Albert Payson Terhune who wrote "Lad: A Dog," my favorite book when I was nine). He wasn't here, so I talked to Colly about the war in Iraq - and to Og, about Albert Payson
Terhune!

:)

I met a lot of interesting people, made some good friends, made some mediocre enemies, and decided to hang out here.

If Albert Payson Terhune had been here, and if he had answered my question, I wouldn't have had an excuse to hang around.

May he and Lad both rest in peace. What a brilliant dog!

The general board is for losers though >.> (no offense to those that go there)
And I don't show any creativeness with my writing I just write what I'm thinking at the time...which I end up editing later cause it makes me look bad >.>

Spawn has a point.

The AH is more than a place for authors to hang out and talk shop. It's...A place for authors to talk shop and hang out.

We discussed that a while back, and I agree, but as I recall the consensus was that the serious board would have very little traffic... Which there might be a good point in that.

I would love it if the sticky threads at the top started by the AH Librarian, were handed over to someone who is presently active. Quite useless at the moment, and they could be really handy!

Or, perhaps we could comb through the archives and retrieve writing posts and start a newer, better thread to replace this one... There's grammar, and usage, and arguments about lexicological details, and writing challenges, all kinds of nuggets.

That's the "hangout" part.

We can't write without readers, yanno. And we like to keep our fans close by. And our spawn...;)
