Movie Review Thread

Best evidence that the movie hit the triggers it was supposed to hit? All the 10-15 year olds in my fencing class this morning trying to decide which moment was the coolest. Exactly what the movie was intended to do!

So yeah, I loved it. Makes me want to buy a fedora and a whip. *grin*

That's not the reason you want to buy a fedora and a whip.

;)

You must have missed the Iron Man officially kicks ass thread 3113 had. ;)

Must have . . . haven't been around much lately. :p

Personally, with the Hulk and Thor movies coming up, I can't wait for the inevitable Avengers flick. :D

Yep. I hope they don't' screw it up.

National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets - Don't bother.

Rescue Dawn (starring Christian Bale)
Excellent war pic about an American fighter pilot whose plane crashes in Laos just prior to the full-out Vietnam War. He survives the crash and lives through a hellish period of time in a POW camp from which he ultimately escapes. Outstanding acting and storyline. Based on actual events. A must-see.

My summer movies are Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, and Hancock but I'm not a FANBOY! LOL

Hancock looks so amazing (plus I love Will Smith in practically everything), but the early reviews (the people who saw the incomplete version) have been really negative. Evidently they weren't happy with the premise (what they don't tell you in the trailers) or the resolution. We'll see if it can be salvaged, because I can't think of a better story idea (Smith as an alcoholic, disinterested superhero). :D

The Hulk looks cool. I'm crossing my fingers. As opposed to what Bel said earlier, I like expectations. The idea of anxiously looking forward to a big movie for months, only to have it fulfill (and maybe exceed) expectation is very appealing. I feel that way about Dark Knight, which I fully expect to be as amazing as anything we've seen up to now (the new Harry Potter should be great as well).

Just finished watching The Golden Compass.

I know it's supposedly a kids movie, but I admit, I loved it. The special effects with the animals are amazing, the storyline is compelling, and the world that has been constructed is believable and very rich.

I'm buying this one on dvd. It's probably not appropriate for younger children...the storyline is a little scary, but the older kids that were here loved it, too.

That gives me another reason to see it then. I was waiting to see if anyone liked it before asking for it for the birthday.:)

Jumper is really good. But only if you watch Ishtar and Heaven's Gate first.

You have to watch one of the (critically) worst movies ever before you can enjoy Jumper? Interesting...

In this last week I watched Rambo, Lucky Number Sleven, and Rocky.

Rambo was brutal. Not just the hero-violence, but the imagery of the genocide in the beginning. It's the type of thing that really goes on around the world. It's very powerful. It makes you wish that you could help the way that they do. If only it were that simple.

Lucky Number Sleven is along the lines of Leon: The Professional meets The Usual Suspects meets Reservoir Dogs. I think. I honestly had no idea what was going on until just before they explained it all. And even then I think I needed them to explain it to me before I belived it. It didn't end as strong as it begane, but it wasn't so far off that I didn't like it. I might have to buy a copy of that.

The trailer of Casino Royal made me want to buy that as well. I saw it that one time a few months ago, and it is the only Bond movie that I like. I will have to take care of that this weekend. Maybe.

And Rocky might be one of the best of the series. It's up there with I and IV (my favorites). Maybe in between them. I'm not sure. The fight was unrealistic Rocky fair as always (these guys have never heard of defense), but it was believable within the Rocky universe. His motivational speech to his son outside the restaurant was also one of the better "Get out there and live your life for yourself" speeches that I have ever heard. I am going to need to learn how to take that advice to its fullest. It was that good.

I saw The Incredible Hulk tonight and give it two enthusiastic thumbs up. It's every bit as good (for completely different reasons) as Iron Man. Ed Norton remains one of my favorite actors and he really nails Bruce Banner, combining his need to protect those around him, the need to protect his curse from falling into the hands of the military, and his desperation to find a cure (as well as the crushing loneliness he feels). The scenery is beautiful, the CGI is first rate, the action is amazing and I enjoyed almost everything (Tim Roth was very cool as the bad guy, but Banner's doctor friend was a little silly and overwrought).

For anyone who doesn't already know, there's a great cameo at the very end of the film that signals the future of the franchise.

Oh yeah, there are a couple of early cameos that made everyone in the theater react (including Stan Lee's finest one yet).

Thumbs down on The Hulk.

It was too fast. Too action packed. Too much CGI. It had sci fi. And what was that big green thing? How many big green things do you see throwing cars around? Yeah, see what I mean?

This movie was no Snow Falling on Cedars.

Now...

there's a...

real...

zzzZZZZZZzzzz

er, what was I saying?

Oh yeah, go see The (2008) Hulk. It really seriously does not suck. And you won't fall asleep. Because it's too friggin loud. But mostly because it's a high protein, low carb and magically delicious action-packed part of your nutritious movie breakfast. Or dinner. Or lunch.

Elizabeth: the Golden Age...

Watch it. It's a beautiful movie. Cate Blanchett portrays Elizabeth as all too human, Geoffrey Rush is superb as her adviser Walsingham, and Clive Owen is dashing as Sir Walter Raleigh.

There are heartbreaking scenes and heart-thumping scenes, such as the one of the Spanish Armada burning. I only had one quibble: where was Robert Dudley?

Gorgeous epic, well worth the watch.

That was good. I really like Blanchett.

We suspect that a surviver of the Spanish Armada is the reason my mostly U.K. grandmother looks so Spanish, as does my aunt.

That was 520 years ago, and about 25 generations....an awful lot for one spanish ancestor to have that much influence. Sure we're talking about the same thing?

I'm just talking about a family rumor. I never said it was anywhere near true ;)

Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is classic escapist Saturday afternoon serial action flick.

<snip>

Expectations can be a bitch. I think expectations probably had a hell of a lot to do with why we had to wait 19 years.

I have plans to go see this tomorrow, if I can work it out. I can't wait!

Personally, I was completely let down. Forget expectations, I just didn't buy very much of it, no matter what came before it. I wouldn't say to not see it, but I wish I had waited for it to come out on HBO (I wouldn't have thought it was worth it to pay the $3.99 for PPV).

Saw "The Incredible Hulk" yesterday. Honestly thought the series was redeemed from the '03 fuckup they did. Edward Norton was definitely a good casting job as Bruce Banner. And as Des said, there is a cameo you'll want to see, though rumors of it have been floating since a certain other movie came out.
