I have been there! I did the only sensible thing when my hot water heater broke - I went back to bed and stayed there all day. I recommend it. Bribe the kids with candy and scissors- it works for mine every time.

I'm getting pretty dang tired of these unexpected expenses.

We were already stretched fairly thin in May, but we replaced the stove - done. Needed some major car repair - partially done, the rest in a month.

But this morning, to wake up to NO hot water?

I knew this was coming, knew the life span of that particular appliance, but still.

Do we have a spare $400 for a new one (cheap end) at this moment, about a week before payday? Hell, no.

Do I want to take cold showers for a week? Hell, no.

(Kids don't care - they'll be playing in the water outside all day, anyway. Do kids even need showers in the summer?)

Wonders if I can give blood or something about 50 times (no clue if or how much that pays) before pay day.

God, this sucks.

I mean, how incredibly discouraging it is, to try and regain some financial ground, only to be slapped back down again.

Oh this is easy to fix... just have your husband gargle with hot tea and lick you clean.....

Next problem please!

Guess we're more used to losing hot water over here!

failing that go for a run then turn the sprinkler on and cool off whilst running through it with your kids. i always loved it when my parents joined in with silly stuff like that

My Brother in Law (who lives in England) has a cold shower every morning winter and summer. He is otherwise quite sane.

I have to be sort of clean.

Sponge baths.

Heat some water up. Washcloth. Soap. Start from the top and work your way down.

Heat up water so you can wash your hair. If you're really brave, throw on a bathing suit, set up the sprinkler or hose, and do it outside.

Living midwest style with no hot water in summer just sucks... I know the feeling SSS Do you have scratch and dent facilities? Also When I lived in Missouri - (ewww bad memories and good all twisted up there).... the water heater aways seemed to be flubbing up - We took the top off and realized the heating coils were calcified (about an inch of lime scale on everything!)- cleaned everything up with vinegar and baking soda, put it back together and worked just fine. I dunno... just an idea to look at.

Running through the srpinkler would work too

Ex b/f of mine saved money by sneaking into the local hospital and using the patients' showers. Could put on a fantastic limp if an RN saw him.

Teaching, school - surely gym and showers? Otherwise the EL remedy. The French just use loads of cologne and deodorant - sometimes not loads.

And I happen to enjoy a solid physical workout and having really, sweaty, athletic sex, myself.

But I can't think about sex.

If you work out in the gym, can't you use the showers there? Otherwise, what I call a spit bath, as some others have suggested. I don't know why it's called a spit bath. Maybe because it's a lot like cats and other animals do to clean themselves.

I so know how this is. It's something we've struggled with our entire marriage. Every time it seems we get our head above water, something happens to knock us back under. My vehicles has been sitting in the driveway for almost two weeks because we don't have the money to buy the part to fix it.

I feel your pain.

When we had well water (yes, we lived in the middle of BFE), the well pump went out, and since it was the submersible kind, it was also more expensive. Husband was laid off at the time, and I wasn't making much more than what he drew in unemployment.

We had a couple of those huge water coolers like you see on the back of utility trucks, so we filled them up every evening at his mother's house (a mile or so down the road), and borrowed a friend's shower every evening.

We did this for three weeks. No water.

About 9 years ago, when most of Seattle lost power for up to a week after an amazing lightning storm (613 power transformers went pfffft!), I survived by showering at the gym. It wasn't optimal, but it worked. I didn't do anything on the computer though and I ate out a lot. Also read at night by candlelight.
