Okay, so I switched to Firefox this weekend because for some reason IE wouldn't recognize that I had updated Flash and I couldn't watch any videos on Youtube and the like. Now Firefox has gone cuckoo on me. On some sites (like in gmail), instead of the regular font, it has changed everything to like a balloon style font, and I can't read anything. Grr...

Any of you tech gurus out there have any suggestions?

Go to Preferences - drop down menu under Firefox. Hit the Content tab. Set the typeface to what you want. That should run ok unless the incoming messages are over-riding the Firefox setting.

That should work, I haven't run into anything overiding Firefox settings.

I have...page 2 of any story on Lit the font changes...it's different than the first page, which uses the preferences font. The second page the sets the font.

I'm going to post a picture here of what it's doing. According to my firefox prefs, it's set on Times New Roman. Well, this font is definitely not Times New Roman... plus, it's doing it on more than one site.

I'm beginning to think my whole computer is fubared, and I just need to reformat because it's running incredibly slow (takes 5 minutes or longer for the browser to initially open, and when I went to open my photo editor program, the start menu froze up, and then when I did get it to work, instead of launching the program like it was supposed to, it opened the program folder.)

Be back to post the pic in a sec.

Go back to Preferences / Content
Click the Advanced button next to typeface
Turn off 'Allow page to choose own font'
Make sure Character coding is on Western (ISO-8859-1)

It's already set that way. This is something that just started happening last night. Earlier in the day, it worked normally.

Oh dear... I've run out of ideas

It's not doing it here at lit, but so far, two of the other sites I go to, it's doing it on.

Like I said, I'm beginning to think the whole computer is fubared, and I just need to wipe it clean and start over. I've had this laptop for four (I think) years, and I'm sure it's got a lot of crap built up in it. I tried defragging it last night to see if it would speed things up any. I left it running for over 12 hours and it only got 44% done. I stopped it there because I didn't want to be without computer all day.

Do you do all the maintenance; ad-aware, spybot, defragging and all that? Reinstalling Firefox might help.

Seriously, please run Ad-Aware and Spybot (free at download.com). Also clean up your machine go to search and look in files and folders for: *.tmp Delete all temp files found.

I would also suggest going to "run" and type in: msconfig
and see how many programs are trying to run in the back ground. Look at the startup tab and uncheck things like quicktime, or any other program that doesn't need to be there.

Running spybot at the moment, though it's not really picking up much. I don't do a lot of surfing that picks up that kind of stuff. Talked to my tech friend, and he had me run CCleaner, and that made a world of difference in things. He also had me do the msconfig thing (which I already knew about but hadn't done in quite awhile). Hopefully doing all of this will keep me from having to reformat because I really don't want to go through the hassle.

I recommend Avast, it's quite hardcore when it comes to dealing with bugs and stuff. Bootscan and delete everything that's infected. Re-installing Firefox might help, too. And make sure to back-up before you reformat the harddrive.

And - pessimistic but true - there ARE things that not even reformatting can kill.

Spybot only found one thing. Ad aware found 6. So there wasn't much as far as spy stuff on the machine.

Since running the CCleaner, it's run a lot faster and smoother. Hopefully getting rid of 4 years worth of crap in the registry and such made a big difference.

He had me turn off the pretties (set it for performance instead of letting windows choose)... but I couldn't stand the stark, boxy look, so I turned them back on. Luckily, it still runs just as smoothly, so I can have my pretties. :)
