Do you control your writing or does your writing control you? It's a question I've often asked myself. When I am writing at my best, my writing is controlling me and I'm just a kind of vehicle for it to move through. What about you?

Neither. I just take other people's suggestions and run with them, for the most part. My best stories are collaborative, even though I didn't intend them to be. "I get by with a little help from my friends."

My drive to write often controls me.
Typically the words are directed very intentionally by me.

Of course, not always.

I'm envious of those who say their writing controls them, or that their characters have a will of their own, or that the turn of events in that story they're writing catch them by surprise.

To achieve something close to that, I'd need to freebase mushrooms that are illegal in most parts if the western world. And to no use - I'd be too high to type.

No, when I write, I write. Consciously and planned.

When the words are flowing, I am but a conduit. Or something like that.

Lately however, it's been a struggle.

My moods control my writing.

Once I actually have characters and am in a mindset to write they simply do whatever it is they're going to do. I just try my best to describe it.

It's like driving a car. I decide where I want it to go, and look out for obstacles in my path.
