Just got an email asking me to sign a petition against an "artist" whose work includes taking a stray dog, chaining inside a gallery without food or water and letting it die.
I found THIS site about it.
I really hope it's a hoax. really really.

Yeah, I checked Snopes before I posted.

I really hope it's a hoax.

Bonsai Kitten all over again?

Otoh, there was that russian performance artist who filmed himself having sex with sheep...

This is the depth of Pointlessness that the Modernist movement in art has fallen to. Modernism is over a hundred years old. It has lost any ability to inspire or excite anymore so those no-talents who insist on aspiring to recognition within it are left to this kind of trash. "Twits from the University of Paranoia" is what one very respected critic called them. I concur. If this isn't a hoax, I say take the fool and throw him into the midst of a PETA convention. A film of the ensuing madness would qualify as a work of neo-Modernism iteself. ;)

Great idea :D

Of course you and I belong to a different PETA, "people eating tasty animals" :D

That's meta art. Awesome.

How is this Art???

Half of the crap they call art looks worse than a 3 year olds fingerpainting to me!
Or the so called "sculpture" of welding a bunch of junk together
Anything involving a living thing is performance, not art, separate categories to me

I don't really care for the impressionists either, just doesn't appeal to me. :)

LOL, that last puts you in a distinct minority, DP. Impressionism is the most popular style of art in history. It's also very difficult. One can take classes on the subject . . . in the south of France . . . painting, drinking French wine, eating Provincal cooking . . . coming home at the end of a day's session to some loving arms . . . :D

As big of an art junkie as I am...I find a lot of things go beyond pretention and pushing boundaries for "the sake of art". Its not art, its propaganda. Making a name for yourself by starving an animal?? To prove what?
Its equally repulsive to think people can walk by a living thing knowing its dying and not lifting a finger to help. Its done on a daily basis as is, read the news, look back at the Holocaust, see what's going on in Dafur, see what's going on in your own back yard.
It doesn't need to be glorified in the name of Art.

You people obviously don't understand performance art. The problem is that what has been described is only HALF an exhibit.

Take the artist and chain it up as the other half of the exhibit. Chain the two pieces in the exhibit far enough away from each other that they can't reach each other. Then watch the artistic comments about the exhibit!

What I understand about performance art is that it seems to be done mostly by people who can neither get a job acting nor produce anything solid that anyone wants to buy. So I guess chaining the artist up in a gallery makes a certain amount of sense. At least he/she wouldn't be out in the cold and rain while starving to death. ;)

Impressionism's certainly okay with me. I'm very fond of the early 20th century California school, which was really part of the Impressionist movement from when Impressionism reached California.

I'm also very keen on the Hudson River school. Not impressionist, but great landscapes!

As far as depictions of women, give me the Pre-Raphaelites for big, curvy, GORGEOUS women you can get lost in.

Starving dog exhibit reported as a hoax
The story of a dog being starved to death as part of an art exhibition appears to have been falsely reported by Costa Rican newspaper The Nation, according to new sources. I reported the appalling story here last week among global outrage about the exhibit and a reported invitation to repeat the work elsewhere.

It has now emerged, however, that artist Guillermo Habacuc Vargas intended the work to be a stunt to show how a starving dog suddenly becomes the centre of attention when it is in a gallery, but not when it is on the street. The work was intended to expose people for what they really are - "hyprocritical sheep". He said that in order for the work to be valid, he and the gallery had to give the impression that the dog was genuinely starving to death and that it died.

Juanita Bermúdez, director of the Codex Gallery, stated that she would not have allowed the dog to be mistreated, that it ate and drank regularly, and that it was allowed to escape back to the streets from where it was taken at the end of the exhibit. "It is conceptual art and a work that leaves a social message", she said.

The stunt provoked massive outrage on a global scale, and over a million people have signed an online petition to try and prevent another dog being starved to death in a repeat of the exhibit. Unconfirmed reports say that the artist even received death threats...
Hm. So now is it art?

I'd love to see those million people each spring for the cost of one neuter/spay.

If you want to effectively protest the mistreatment of street dogs, that would be one suggestion

On a related topic, does anyone remember that guy who wanted to inject a kitten with cocaine as 'art'. For the life of me I can't think of his name. Some British wanker, but I'm not all that up on my pop culture I fear.

Anyone know what came of THAT debacle? Cruelty to animals and drug possession, but five bucsk says he wouldn't spend a night in jail because hes a 'celebrity.'

If one were inclined to buy this art, how would one display it? Just curious.

Given that "celebrities" have gotten serious jail time for both (remember football player Michael Vick jailed for his dog fights? How about Robert Downey, jr. and others jailed for possession?), I'll take that $5 bucks.

Celebrity doesn't get you off, it just gets you better lawyers.

I say, wait 'til the doggie is really, really hungry, then chain the 'artist' up, unchain the dog, and let the patrons of the arts watch the dog slowly consume the guy over the course of several days.

I remember reading about an exhibit a few years ago where an artist put live goldfish in a blender wired to a button that said "Push". The button was easily accessible to the viewing public and actually was live. Someone actually pushed the button and frapped the fish.

I also read just a couple days ago about an artist who want to get a terminally ill person to die as part of his art exhibit.

Another twit from the University of Paranoia had himself shot on video as part of his "art". It was only with a .22 rimfire and only hit his shoulder but the blatant stupidity was astounding. Since then, having established a reputation as a complete nutcase, he makes a living selling really elaborate dollhouses. No, really!
