Who does home projects?

our "home" projects will be stripping the popcorn ceiling and painting two bedrooms, a bathroom, a dining room and the hallway with primer, and steam cleaning the carpets..

ahhh the joys of preparing to sell the house

Take photos. Post em here.

We cleaned off the porch this weekend. K's working on his car. We also, in the last year, reupholstered the dining room chairs, and put together bookcases and stuff. I normally gotta nag and ride his ass to get things done, but it gets done.

And in complete fairness, I DID NOT have to nag or ride his ass to get the porch cleared off.

I'll begin very soon to make a table.

I will take photos to post here...

Will be a good memory! :D

Looks like it will be great Betticus....wish we had enough yard to need such things...I miss my gigantic block in Oz.:( I am getting back into the renovating here now the seasonal depression is lifting..and yay, he has helped a little and also agreed I was right about the things I have been recommending we need to do very quickly. My latest venture has been taking off the ventilation grates on the top of the windows to clean them out....sheesh, I swear they have not been cleaned since the house was built in the 70's and I discovered just why no air came through them when they were opened for airflow! Air is blowing through them again now so next will be painting window frames, stripping more walls, plastering more walls, more painting, tiling, putting in a bathroom (hopefully to be followed by an ensuite), and he says he is going to pull out the ceiling of our floor and see what condition the roof is in....lol, he does listen to me after all, just takes 2 years for him to acknowledge it!!:D

Mister Man thinks he can redo the kitchen on his own. I'm very afraid! He did used to do construction once upon a time. Anyway, so this might be a project if he does some reading and decides he can do it. It will be cosmetic changes at least - new tiling, cabinets, some paint on the wall. Actually I think that's the extent of it, so maybe it's doable.

Not as difficult as it seems, especially if he already has building skills. F went to work in Saudi Arabia and left me the task of removing the old tiles (3 layers of tiles I found!), remove all the old cabinets and plumbing, strip, re plaster, and paint the walls....then when he returned we did the tiling together with me doing a lot of brake work which he now admits was worth his frustration to get the beautiful finish we did instead of uneven tiling done in haste. His friends were amazed we had done it ourselves, and he was proud of what we accomplished. :)

Really?? It's doable? Oh, fabulous. I'm so glad to hear it. He has the building skills and I have the aesthetic ... er, skills. And I'm willing to pitch in and work hard, as I think it sounds kind of fun (eek, call me crazy!).

What sort of table will you be making? I'm seriously thinking of building a new dining room table this year, probably in an American mission style.

LOL, if it is a project like ours it will mean kissing neat and pretty fingernails goodbye and a fair share of cuts etc., to hands. Whenever I get back into the renovating/home projects, I find my hands are almost instantly bleeding and needing lots of repair work, but then I tend to get right into it and almost straight away toss off any gloves I might have foolishly believed I would wear to help avoid such problems along with the dermatological ones. Gets done much faster but is painful until everything heals again.

This was my project for last few years - the garden. I wish I'd taken some before photos, but it was completely overgrown, no lawn was laid, it was horrid. This is what I managed to do with it, it's very minimalist:

Those were taken a few months ago. This year I'm hoping to create a more arrid, desert theme.

Nice work. I am hoping to bring a little grass into our garden once we start on the outside. The Dutch have a love of paving everything (including footpaths etc.,), so most gardens are paved with potted plants or perhaps the occasional tree slipped in between the pavers. I hate it and just want a couple of metres of grass in between the plants even if I have to clip it by hand on my knees.

That kind of thing I can handle, actually. My stereotypically girly weaknesses are more in the area of bugs. But getting roughed up and dirty? No problem.

Be careful. Some popcorn ceiling has asbestos in it. If I remember correctly, the year to use as a possible cutoff for asbestos was 1983 or something. That's why mine is still there, damn it!

Sorry, I was a little off on my years. The below link says 1979.

More than an eyesore
If you want to remove an acoustic ceiling, you’ll first need to determine whether it contains asbestos. Asbestos was used as a binder in many construction materials before it was banned in 1978 for posing health risks such as cancer and respiratory disease. You’re not required by law to test for asbestos, but the Environmental Protection Agency strongly recommends it.

If your home was built prior to 1979, the chances are very good that your popcorn ceiling contains asbestos. In fact, it’s not uncommon to find asbestos in acoustic ceilings installed in the 1980s because existing inventories were exempt from the 1978 ban.

That evil looking ceiling

Bugs are fine. Dirt is fine.

Introduce one dead rodent and the deal is OFF. I have no idea why this is.

We put in a sprinkler system a couple years ago. My husband and his friend went in and rented some machine and dug the trenches in one then the other's lawns. Then they used pvc pipes. I live on a hill so it was tricky getting it all just right but the result is less wasted water and much greener grass. I hope it goes well for you.

I am no fan of dead rodents, but I had cats growing up, and they liked to show us their appreciation...often.

Looks like everyone has been pretty busy. :)

That yard looks really nice SV, it must have taken you quite a bit of time.

The lawn sprinkler, yeah the PVC pipe system is the best but this is my first time and I don't want to spend a whole lot on something that I may totally screw up and have to do over.

I learn as I get older. ;)

Cat, sounds like you are close to rebuilding the whole house! Where's the photos?

Hey! When you're done can you come and dig me out a dungeon? I need a huge hole, will double as a spa. :D

Now, that is an ambitious project you've got there. What are you gonna do with that new underground space?
