Obama's speech on race

Hey BB, Bush only had to give a speech at Bob Jones to be tainted as bad as Obama spending twenty years in Wrights racist pews. Fair analogy right? UD is the epitome of political fairness.

Illustrating the blatant double standard is completely fair.

The views of white evangelicals are just as extreme as anything Wright has ever said, and yet they (and the GOP politicians that have rubbed elbows with them for decades) are given a pass while Rev. Wright and Senator Obama are raked over the coals by this mass of hypocritical morons, present company included of course.

Falwell, Robertson, Parsley and others have a long, LONG history of religious, sexual, and racial bigotry... Of course its relevant.

THE PUSSY and THE OLORED CANDIDATE

the "dream" team

Since that sniper story didn't work out so well...

Senator Clinton's been sinking in the polls since she was proven to be lying about landing in sniper fire in Bosnia, the Clintons have pulled out another story that absolutely no one will believe. Bill Clinton tried to convince audiences that Hillary actually tried to volunteer for the military in the 1970s.

"I remember when we were young, right out of law school, she went down and tried to join the Army and they said 'Your eyes are so bad, nobody will take you,'" he said, after heralding her record on issues of concern to the military, such as body armor and access to health care.

Hillary had tried to peddle that same story earlier, but in her version, it was the Marines that she was trying to join.

It's a story she seldom tells, not even in her autobiography. But Clinton, who opposed the Vietnam War, says she once tried to join the Marines shortly after the conflict ended. She recounted the failed enlistment one time when she was first lady, in a speech to female veterans in June 1994. She said she went to an Arkansas military recruitment office shortly before she married Bill Clinton in fall 1975. Once the Marine recruiter saw the bespectacled law professor, she told the group, he rejected her by saying, "You're too old, you can't see and you're a woman."

Army, Marines, hey Bill Clinton was only the Commander-in-Chief, no need for him to tell the different services apart.

And does anyone really believe that after graduating from Yale and just at the time she married Bill that she was truly interested in joining the Marines? Or that, at the beginning of the volunteer military, a recruiter would have just dismissed her like that without getting her to fill out some form? The story just doesn't hold water. And the Clintons should recognize it. She didn't even put it in her autobiography. But now when everyone is talking about her tendency to stretch the truth, Bill is so oblivious that he trots out another tall tale.

Lincoln said this as well:

"I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything."

Fourth Debate with Stephen A. Douglas at Charleston, Illinois, September 18, 1858
(The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln edited by Roy P. Basler, Volume III, pp. 145-146.)

So Lincoln was against interracial marriage.. And? And those positions were abandoned in the course of the Civil War.

This excuses Falwell, Robertson, Parsley, Hagee and the rest how exactly? And what has this got to do with the blatant hypocrisy of the right when ignoring the clear intolerance of those white evangelicals while lambasting Rev. Wright?

Your defense is that a former President also was against interracial marriage? Really? Here's some news for you, so were all of the previous Presidents, and many of the ones that came after, at least until 1967 when the Supreme Court struck down bans on interracial marriage in Loving v. Virginia.

It does explain why the republicans call themselves "the party of Lincoln" though.

I'm not defending anything, you asked and I responded. So you smear all Presidents to save your hero? Typical. How do you know what they thought about it. Find me some presidential quotes on the subject.

Of course you aren't defending anything. You're just trying to draw parallels between Lincoln and a known white evangelical bigot. Talk about smearing Presidents to save your own..

It's obvious that the right wing only has trouble with religious leader's views when they aren't actively courting their followers in the hopes of winning an election. As McSell-out has done repeatedly to hate-mongering white evangelicals.

It's also painfully obvious that you and others are more than willing to berate Rev. Wright while ignoring or denying the same type of behavior from those religious personalities who happen to back the GOP. Falwell was but one example of many.

Many white evangelical preachers have a history of intolerance and racist behavior. Many of those very same white evangelical bigots are actively courted by the GOP. Falwell, Robertson, Parsley, Hagee.. et al.

McSell-out for example called Falwell and Robertson "agents of intolerance" who exerted an "evil influence" on the Republican Party in 2000.. Then when he found in 2006 that they were a needed constituency he conveniently forgot their tendencies toward hateful behavior and embraced their support, speaking at Liberty University. Neither Falwell nor Robertson had changed their messages in the interim, in fact Falwell stated that the ACLU, Feminists, and Homosexuals Were responsible for 9/11 Attacks in 2001. Robertson blamed the same groups for Katrina hitting New Orleans as God's punishment.

But yeah.. Rev. Wright is WAY out of line..

You didn't finish UD....you should have wrote: You have to READ for a very long time with my extreme prejudice and all will become clear.

Actually, I only had to get halfway through the 2nd paragraph to find this ...

"The facilities should be separate. When God has drawn a line of distinction, we should not attempt to cross that line."

Falwell's jeremiad continued: "The true Negro does not want integration.... He realizes his potential is far better among his own race." Falwell went on to announce that integration "will destroy our race eventually. In one northern city," he warned, "a pastor friend of mine tells me that a couple of opposite race live next door to his church as man and wife."

No extreme prejudice needed to see the bigotry in that. It's one thing to be disagreeable, it's another to cut off your nose to spite your face. Seriously, think about your responses before defending someone who says shit like that.

tell it to those in Little Italy, China Town etc:rolleyes:

I see the Libs are throwing as many red herrings as they can into the fray.

If anyone of the repub candidates in the past 30 years had been a devote member of one of those evangelical flocks, you can be damn sure the press and the dems would have a field day. As it is, all they can do is yap-a-yap-a-yap about how those repubs were endorsed by same. Get a clue kiddies, you can't choose who's going to endorse you. Anymore than Barack can choose Farakan to endorse him.

While Farakans endorsement seems to be something special to BB, it don't mean shit to me one way or the other. Calypso Louie has to endorse someone.

But the case of Obama and Wright is significantly different. Obama sought him out and stayed with him for 20 years. No one, least of all the secularists, seem to have a grasp of exactly what a 'spiritual advisor' is or does. Perhaps they think that all they do is sit around and read the Bible. They use the Bible to relate to the current world. That encompasses morals and ethics, all of which is related to business, politics, and day to day life. How one relates to themself, other people, and the world at large.

It borders on insane to believe that Obama wasn't well aware of Wrights beliefs and world views relating to those beliefs. It is also borders on insane to believe that Obama spent 20 years studying with a man whose views Obama claims to have views he strongly disagrees with. Are we to believe it was a debating society? (Which totatlly undermines Baracks public statements.)

And while he won't throw his 'uncle' under the bus, he seems quite content to do so with his grandmother. But she's white and deserves it, right?

Yeah, yeah, but how many presidential candidates sit in their pews for twenty fucking years and get away with it, is the point...and the other point is did any of those other presidential preachers sermons rise to the level of Wrights hatred? If so name one.

Falwell, Robertson, Hagee, Parsley, Shaeffer..

I've already named more than one and given more than one example from Falwell alone. But you want specifically anti-American, plain old bigoted idiocy isn't enough, fine.

When Mike Huckabee was asked by Katie Couric to name one book he'd take with him to a desert island, besides the Bible, he named Religious Right leader Francis Schaeffer's "Whatever Happened to the Human Race?" a book where he compared America to Hitler's Nazi Germany.

Was any conservative political leader associated with Schaeffer running for cover? Far from it. Rev. Schaeffer was a frequent guest of the Kemps, had lunch with the Fords, stayed in the White House as their guest, he met with Reagan, helped Dr. C. Everett Koop become Surgeon General. He was a hero to the evangelical community and a leading political instigator. When he died in 1984 everyone from Reagan to Kemp to Billy Graham lamented his passing publicly as the loss of a great American. Not one Republican leader was ever asked to denounce Schaeffer or distance himself from his statements.

I LOVE NASCAR! I've always hated low-profile tires; reminds me of those tiny Euro-cars, the kind I want us to drive, because inside, I'm not black, white, or even redneck, I'm green and let me tell you, 500 miles electric is just as exciting as 500 miles gas... [/voice, begin vapid, hopeful anticipation...]

I see the time off didn't do anything for your lucidity, or lack thereof.
