Anyone know how contest votes are tabulated? Hi.. nervous newbie writer here. My first story got posted here under the Valentine's Day contest. Of course I have to go check on a daily basis (ok, more than that) to see if I have enough votes to count. The vote count seems to fluctuate, I've been losing total vote count. It will rise than go back down. And I am talking total vote not the rating, (heck I'll be thrilled if I end up with 3.0!)

So, sorry to bug you all if it's an obvious place that I can go to on this site and read the voting tabulation rules, but I haven't found it. If there is, I would be much obliged for an arrow in the right direction. If not, anyone have ideas on the vote fluctuation? Can someone take back a vote? If they vote for another story does it cancel the vote for your story out?

This might not be the right forum page for this, but I figured someone here would know. Thanks for any and all help :D - Amber

Hi there and welcome!

Votes going down and scores going up usually means a sweep happened. Multiple votes from one person are swept away along with malicious votes, etc. No one is quite sure how it works but in the process we all gain or lose votes on our stories and our scores are correspondingly affected. This doesn't just affect the contest entries but everyone's submissions.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the welcome and the explanation. That makes sense. I'm amazed at how many "hits" my story has received with a low percentage of votes... but I guess a non vote is better than a "1"! Thanks again - Amber :)

Thank you for the welcome. Hope I have enough stories in me to stay a while. -Amber

Don't worry about bulk. Some of us here aren't even authors. Not me. I have eaight stories posted, though I haven't written anything since fall of 2006...

Oh god somebody shoot me! (preferably with a bubberband, or a water pistol, and not one of those super soakers, I'm at work right now ;) )

Hi Amber, welcome. It's typical to see a very low percentage of 'readers' vote on stories. And the 'views' count, which we think of as readers, doesn't even mean someone read that story. It just means they clicked and opened the story page. They might have hit the back button after the first few sentences. Try not to worry about it and just write.

Hiya!

Hi Amber and welcome! I'm a newbie too and had the exact same question. But I really wanted to agree with your statement that a view with no vote is better that a view with a 'one' vote.

Personally, I'm thrilled that anyone reads anything that I write. I blog on another site and have about 30 stories over there. The comments are the best part for me.

The part that frustrates me is the amount of time it takes for a story to be approved! Some that I've read...well let's just say, I would be embarrassed to have read - poor grammar, poor spelling, and so on, but SOMEONE had to read it to get it 'approved'.

So now, I need to go read yours - and I always leave at least a vote and usually a comment. Ya gotta give to get!:rose:

How do, Ilsa. Welcome to the AH.

I understand about the poor quality of some of the stories, but Lit doesn't hold them up to edit. It holds them up to make sure that nothing breaks their rules.

There are people out there that would love to shut this site down.

Don't let anyone feed you a bunch of bullshit about how votes are tabulated. This is the real story. I has to do with the phases of the moon, how well the site owners did on their last trip to Las Vegas, whether or not the Troll's herpes sores are healing today, your astrological sign and several other minor factors.

Did you ever hear of a game called "Craps"?

I thought there was a mayo jar on Funk and Wagner's back porch involved somehow?
