The deaf world is pretty much my life, but I am actually hearing myself. I began learning sign language when I was 4, and I've been in touch with the community ever since! Everybody I work with is deaf, everybody I go to school with is deaf...it's basically my whole life, even though I happen to be able to hear.

And not even that is as good as it could be! I had a scuba diving accident in October 2006 and I'm supposed to find out soon how badly it affected my hearing...but it was definitely affected. I don't hear as well as I used to! But fortunately, being surrounded by deaf people ALL THE TIME, I am prepared for whatever the news may be.
It's okay to say deaf, 90% of deaf people call themselves deaf, and the ones who can hear a little usually say they are hard of hearing...very few people actually say "hearing impaired" except hearing people!
