Yesterday as i was reading the forums, i ran across a quote in 3113's sig:

Why do writers write? Because it isn't there.
--Thomas Berger

I believe this to be amazingly true, and i'm sure i'm not the only one (or two, including 3113) to think so... but for everyone i'm sure its more than just that.

So i want to ask everyone here who has written/is writing something, Why do YOU write?

I write (am writing, to be more accurate) because i have had an idea in my head for so long (since long before i could come to this site legaly ) that i just HAVE to see it. It's just to get something to exist outside of my head, and see how it would be, what it's actually like now that it's more concrete, and if anyone else would like it.

What about all of you?

What about all of you?

I write for a number of reasons:

1. Because there's something that turns me on that isn't on the site. Actually, this turns out to be a bad idea. I don't get turned on by my own stories. It's no fun when you know what's going to happen :(

2. As practice for non-erotic, publishable writing. I'm cutting my teeth here. I find erotic fiction really easy to write. It provides instant motivation, and situations and characters just flow from the keyboard. Of course, if I do ever make it commercially, none of you will know.

3. I love giving pleasure to others. Knowing that I may have gotten someone off with one of my stories is a big thrill to me. I've always been a "giver" sexually. :)

Because I've always been able to express myself better in written words. :)

I write and post stories here because it is fun. Also, I like getting complimentary commenrts, especially from women telling me I have gotten them wet, or similar things. I also like coming onto the AH and joshing or arguing.

ETA: I won't say "because it isn't there" because what I write has been pretty much written before, probably hundreds or thousands of times.

I used to write (I haven't written in over a year) for several reasons. Because it wasn't there, because it was something I wanted to read, because I had ideas in my head that I hadn't seen done that particular way, and because I was really bored at work for a few years ;)

I write, when I do write, because there's this little guy (with horns) in a red suit standing on my shoulder, yelling in my ear and kiccking me in the head when I don't write what he tells me to. :p

aka "The Devil Made Me Do It."

...

Haha, that is so true :p

I write because I'd feel like a fraud hanging out here if I didn't.

The joshing and arguing is also writing, and it comes to the same thing, or at least, a subset of the same thing. Getting an idea out there in the view of another mind.

Good didactic writing, or good didactic speech, for that matter, is a sheer pleasure for me, as reader or listener. I appreciate both the idea and the art with which the exposition unfolds it before me. My favorite example, I suppose, is The Greeks, a little book by a fellow named Kitto, but there are myriad others. A new book, well, you have to proceed with caution, if you don't know the author. Some authors, though, you know you are in the hands of a great mind, and you can trust them, plunge right in and just let them take you where they are going.

I want to be one of those authors.

Because it's not there -

No really, the short answer is for pleasure. Specifically, getting into that "flow" state when creating and editing; the feeling of satisfaction when it's done and it looks pretty good; the satisfaction of knowing that I'm a pretty darned good wordsmith (if never likely to be the creator of The Great American Novel); the high I get from knowing that others are reading and enjoying something I wrote; and the extreme high I get when one of them writes and says that he or she liked it and thought it was good.

I'm a very new writer here (only one story submitted, not out yet), but I write because if I don't, it TORTURES me! I need to get it OUT of my head. Once it's on "paper" (okay, a computer file), I can finally let go of the ideas and free my brain. They aren't gone, but at least they stop torturing me. They can FLY MONKEYS FLY and leave me alone.

Does that make sense? :kiss::kiss::kiss:

I write because I must. It's a compulsion, an addiction. Sweeter than any drug, and far more rewarding because it both exercises my mind and provides me with encouragement.

To spend a day without a 'living word' is like a day in Purgatory.

I think it was David Morrell or Stephen King who answered the question BECAUSE I HAVE TO. It's my answer, too.

Why do I write?

I always wanted to but never did until I was in my late 40's.

Out of boredom at first. Then my first short story turned into a 286 page novel.

After that i was hooked.

Anyway it gives the voices in my head something to do so they will leave me alone.

I write to try and get the word out that people over 45 are still sexual creatures who still are capable of desiring love and passion in their lives and can fall in love with as much relish as a twenty-five year old.

How many romances or erotic novels have you read recently where the main characters are 40 or older? Robin Schone is about the only author that I know of who writes characters in this age group. There is a real need for more novels and more authors who write about people in this age group. BTW, I highly recommend her newest book Scandalous Lovers.

Really? I held off trying to write erotica for a long time because I thought that would be the case, but luckily it turns out I get turned on by my own stuff. It probably help I'm writing about fantasies I secretly wish would happen to me.
