Fred Thompson??? (political)

A distant third place finish in the South Carolina Primary election brought about FOX News and CNN to declare that the Thompson bid for the Presidency is over.

Perhaps.

I went to the website, Fred08 and left an urging not to withdraw and I discovered a rather quiet site. Not the vibrant, busy, aggressive activity one might expect from a campaign with life still left in it.

Neither McCain, who won SC, or Huckabee, who finished second, nor Romney or Guilani can win in November against either Clinton or Obama, god forbid Edwards, by default, has a chance.

I am dismayed at the potential damage a Democrat White House could do to the nations Foreign Policy, International trade policy and Energy future, not even to speak of the disastrous social policies the left advocates as a party platform.

The only saving grace might be that if the American Electorate follows form and respects the concept of checks and balances between the branches of government, that the House or Senate, or both will go back to the Republicans to act as a check on the Executive Branch.

We shall see.

RF: Just FWIW, I disagree with you, Ami. IMHO McCain would have the best bet of winning. The GOP faithful may not think he's conservative enough but they will vote for him (or anyone else) if it means keeping the White House. But as his polling numbers in SC showed, McCain can appeal to others who might otherwise vote Democrat.

So do I Box, and until I visited the website, was merely going to urge Thompson to intensify his efforts.

I agree about the Republican candidates you mention (other than perhaps McCain) having scant chance against most any Democrat who wins through (and not just matching the people themselves--the Bush administration has poisoned the pond for any Republican effort). But you are delusional if you thought/think Thompson has any magic beans the other Republican candidates don't. I'd love for him to be the Republican candidate.

I don't remember having discussed that with you. I think I've seen other things I said I agreed with--in fact I think the very previous posting I made to you was one that said I thought your response was thoughtful.

I try not to be doctrinaire about my views, which I think are pretty eclectic.

But, yes, I usually do think you are delusional, ill-informed, and out of touch--and most certainly about Thompson's chances.

But then I thought anyone would be nuts to vote Bush a second time. (Oops, I think I was right about that one.)

Look. This is the first time in a long while that the presidency has truely been up for grabs. That's why you get Kasinische, Thompson, Hunter and the rest of the "Also Rans" in the race. Do you really think Fred Thompson had a shot? I don't. He did (and maybe still does) have a shot at the Vice Presidental nomination. That would be more likely.
