I know it's early, but this is my favorite news story of the year so far.
KOKOMO (WISH) - A Howard County man is behind bars after he robbed a convenient store and then accidentally shot himself in the groin.
The incident happened on Ohio Street in Kokomo. The suspect was caught after a family member called 911.
Just before 4:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, investigators say 25-year-old Derrick Kosch walked through the front door of the Village Pantry in Kokomo with a handgun and pointed at the woman working the counter.
Detectives say the store's grainy surveillance video doesn't paint a very good picture of the fear on the woman's face or what also happened during the robbery.
Investigators say Kosch accidentally fired the gun and the bullet struck him in the groin.
Shoppers at the convenient store call it poetic justice.
"He deserved every bit of it," said J. J. Jackson of Kokomo.
Police say Kosch somehow fled the scene and while investigators were searching for clues, a 911 call came in from a nearby home. The caller was Kosch's brother.
After receiving the call, officers rushed to the house where the call came from, which is Kosch's grandmother's house. Police found Kosch shot, along with the bag of money but still no gun.
Kosch's grandmother, who doesn't want to be identified, said she's had concerns for her grandson's mental health.
"I just called the jail a little while ago and told them to watch him for suicidal thoughts because he used to come and talk to me from time to time."
It was in those conversations she says, that she realized her grandson was depressed.
He now faces a slew of charges including armed robbery.
