Oh, I had a thought. The Lightning question, we forgot to take into account the speed of light. So we're seeing the lightning after it appears, depending on distance. Talk about one hell of an equation.

But then you'd have to judge the difference in speed of light vs the speed of sound...further away means you'll see it later, so sound has already started traveling...mucks with my head, it's still to early to concentrate on ....lol

And on my day off... what do I do? Research.

Here's what I found, condensed about the speed of light and sound etc etc...

Light travels at 3.00x108 and sound 332 m/s. Since the thunder is the product of lightning, when you see the lightning you should begin to count until you hear the thunder. In this way you should be able to tell how far the thunder has travelled.
