If you knew how much BS there is around Christmas, you'd be a cynic like me. I dont think things have changed much since Dickens' time.

Infotainment. Is that a word? It should be. It's what I consider all the "As seen on TV" commercials selling me the latest Ronco meat dehydrator or Bedazzler. I love those shows, especially the one about colonic health. I can't look away.

Okay, we're never at home at this time. Thank you, ice storm.
Anyway, the satellite's been knocked out due to the storm so we were searching on local channels. We caught the Today Show, and for some reason one of their guests had a big ol' Santa bag and was collecting donated toys to send to troops overseas.
Nice, yes? Lovely gesture, yes? How sweet that the kind and generous folks waiting in line to see the show brought these gifts to donate!
Wrong.
It was the same damn toy. Some sort of alphabet computer game for kids - bumblebee something. Nice toy. But as he went down the line of wanna-be audience members with the open sack, every single person put the same toy inside. After two I was suspicious. After ten I was disgusted.
Yes - donate to the troops and their families. They need it! They need the attention and the love and the support, emotional and financial!
But don't fucking toy with me over it. The audience didn't bring those presents, The Today Show did.
Does that annoy anyone else? Why do they have to lie about every damn thing? Why can't something be done without publicity and acclaim?
Then again, maybe they didn't want to say - The Today Show will be sending all these toys to the troops! Maybe.
Okay, rant over. Bottom line is the toys will go where they are needed.
Hmph.
Staying home and watching daytime TV is dangerous, apparently.
Bwah!
Quite right, Lisa love.

I can see that there is a problem with what to send them for the holidays though. Usually the perfect gift for a soldier might be a bottle of Crown Royal and some Playboy magazines, or Playgirl for the girl soldiers.
Seems like now the under 21 soldiers are the majority, too young to drink, and I heard they can't even have alcohol and porn at thier own bases because it's illegal to bring it or send it into the country.
I assume it's prolly illegal to play poker also but I bet that is one rule broken by every private and general.
Maybe they can go look at Miss July on the internet.
I wonder if they watch the old war movies where the soldiers is drinking whiskey and playing poker while looking at the centerfolds and go "shit"

Having had a few family members over there (one cousin three times counting Storm) I have learned that they really like the phone cards with an hour or more on them so they can call their families. A really big deal during the holidays. We didn't have those, or a phone on my Submarine in the late 70's. No phone service at 400 feet. We did just fine anyway.
