Ranked-choice voting helps to weed out the nutters (ask Sarah Palin!)
Fringe candidates tend to have very devoted though small followings.
In a winner-take-all primary (i.e. no runoff) a well organized whackadoodle might capture a nomination with maybe 25% of the vote, assuming the rest is split amongst a dozen or so less organized dingleberries.
Ranked voting simply weeds out the most extreme candidates first since most mainstream voters reject radical ideologies.
Small wonder the ultra MAGA faction here hates it....it jeopardizes their core value "Tyranny of the fringe minority".
