Most of us care about kids, but we can't do much for the kids living in dystopian hellholes, especially in other states across the nation. Parents are unemployed or underpaid, schools are more prison than education, homeless camps are everywhere, etc. So we learn to ignore all that and react only to the shootings. Iowa was a state of many small farms and many farmers. Now it's a state of fewer farmers driving tractors across vast expanses. The remaining population moved to cities and lost jobs or slid down the ladder to lower paying jobs. That's the background of severe poverty and shootings in Iowa. The unsustainability of huge Iowa farms is temporarily propped up with ethanol subsidies. The former farming population will be leaving the cities, but the corn farms will still fail in Iowa as the aquifers run dry. Cattle herding and bison hunting may be the only sustainable uses of prairie land. And then the situation may look worse from a litster's perspective. Prairie herding and hunting people tend to have frequent small wars between clans, tribes, etc. But that's still better than most of California becoming uninhabitable desert for a few centuries.
