It's only been two days since I started this thread. I wanted to see the responses before posting further. That's hardly "running out."

The truth is, I wasn't sure what I meant by "dirty" when I started the thread. The responses have been illuminating.

"Dirty" is somewhat subjective, but I would echo what someone said above in that it can include both the degree of explicitness and the extremity of the kink involve. I think most of us would probably think of "scat," for example, as a "dirty" subject. It can involve the degree of obscenity used in the story, or the way the characters talk to each other, or the attitude of the characters, or of the narrator, toward sex.

But aside from that, I think it also involves the concept of THINKING of sex as dirty. As taboo, as bad, as wrong, as forbidden, and whether you enjoy thinking of it that way. I think some of us don't. I DO. I think in the right setting it's fun to think of it that way.

For instance, there are women, many women you wouldn't expect to think or talk this way, who like to be called "sluts," knowing that it is a term of derision and disapproval. It is a turn on for them to be called that. I've known women like that. You can find them in social media. That's an example of what I would call wanting sex to be "dirty." The degradation and taboo make the sex hotter. I've also known women who don't ever want that term to be used. I'd offer that difference as an example of the difference between a "dirty" and "non-dirty" attitude toward erotic activity.

I see "dirty" as a necessarily vague concept, more of an emotional response, and I'm curious to what degree people enjoy that and what makes them feel a story is "dirty."

On a more serious note, I asked for clarification because "dirty" has to be put in context. It doesn't always mean the same thing to me.
For example, saying someone has a dirty mind is something I find very positive. I interpret it as having a naughty, seductive mind.
But on the other hand, saying "dirty sex" puts me off. That makes me imagine a sloppy intercourse, often a quickie, where you spit to lube and then plow on, and where there's sloppy kissing, done mostly with tongue and saliva.

As you said, it's quite subjective, and thus too broad a term.

Once the sex starts, I demand that it read real, which means I want to read about the sweat covering their bodies. I want details on what parts are wet. I need to know about the grooming habits of my characters. If there is an errant nipple hair on her body, I expect him to find it, just as it happens in real life. I want to put myself in your story, and if you write your characters as flawed as we all truly are, I’ll be there.

I love it when stories explore far beyond the comfort zone of most people. I don’t really have an off button. Not exactly true, I hate violence, so I’m don’t respond well to abuse. But I get a full-on lady boner when we start talking exploration. If your character, man or woman, explores the body of another, I want to know how each knuckle feels as it pushes through tight spots. Details people. I want details!

Let’s talk hair for a moment. I have never been able to shave myself, anywhere on my body, to the level of porn perfection. I’m okay with that; there will always be a hair I missed or stubble. That’s me and probably you. So when a good writer describes the razor stubble of a non-professional pubic grooming, I see myself in their story. That level of description will definitely turn off people who consider those details as “too much” but I say not enough.

Then there are the smells. Most are amazing, some are intense, but all are hypnotic. The human body’s natural perfume can transport me mentally. Just sitting next to a man or woman who emits a certain musk will make me lose myself in a fantasy. So when I read it in your work, when you describe a trickle of sweat from an armpit, I am right there with you. I love this so much that I’ve even posted to r/OrgasmSweat.

Ladies or guys, I will take it as dirty as you want to give it to me. As long as you provide the human details that get me off, and not just bodies slappin’, I will follow you down any hole you care to go.

So, if you want to make it dirty, just be sure to make it real and make it sweat.

Based only on a reading of the initial post, I would have interpreted "dirty" as "explicit," with detailed descriptions of body parts and positions and resulting fluids. In which case I would have pegged both my reading tastes and my writing style somewhere between a 5 and an 8, depending on the story.

Good evening my dear colleague. Someone who describes sex as I know it, as I have known it to be and have expected it to be over decades of life. The only difficulty that we seem to find here is that our readers expect that which you call "High art writing" to make our stories more readable I believe.

I began with stories pretty much as you describe them and the language and usage thereof was characterised by one commenter as "amateurish". The difficulty is finding the fine line between what you are seeking and what many readers here are expecting. It is a fact that much of what we write here is in the "fantasy" realm, we write from the imagination and the "imaginative, very often, does not leave a whole lot of room for the "reality of human sexuality".

Like I said, a balancing act, a fine line indeed which some of us cross from time to time but mostly do not.
It's a case, many times, and has been previously discussed in these forums, do we write for ourselves or for our readers thereby gathering "votes" for our work.

In the realm of "professional" development how would you approach it from that angle?

I generally enjoy sex that stays vanilla and doesn’t get too dirty or messy. There’s only one erotic story I’ve ever read featuring a golden shower that has turned me on. Bdsm and anal sex generally bother me more than anything else. Role playing games can work, but I’m not into controlling behavior or misleading people. Given what most others have said here, I think I'm pretty boring. I don't want to read or write sex that's very dirty at all, so I'd say basically all of mine is somewhere around a 3 to a 5 at most on a hypothetical 10-point scale. A couple of the scenes in "Kendra" pushed me to about the limits of my comfort zone when it comes to writing the erotic scenes. I enjoy exploring the emotions and the emotional connections of the characters much more than I care about where precisely any given piece of anatomy is rubbing on another.

I've already shared my thoughts on this thread. I'm pretty sure anyone reading my work would use the word "dirty" since I tend to go to extremes. I write for myself, and it just so happens that other people like it that way, which usually yields good results. And by all the standards I've seen defined in this thread - I'm dirty, perhpas even filthy.

Well, tonight I published a short two-page story that, for the most part, isn't that dirty. It’s in Romance and is about a chance meet-cute that isn't so random. It's an implausible story, and I find it funny, charming, and a speedy read.

The reason I post about it is that I have 15 published pieces; this is the first one that isn't dirty (well, maybe a line or two), and I'm eager to see if people will read it. I assume some who know my work will read it, looking for my detailed description of dripping underarms or the smells that linger after sex, or the sounds a body makes involuntarily during intercourse. But they won't find it in this story.

They will find funny and cute.

I'll report back to see if shying away from "dirty" results in significantly fewer views, even though the story is only 2 Lit pages long. BTW, the story is called NOT TODAY SATAN.
