I can’t stand it when a story starts by describing the characters as if it’s a casting call. I lose interest when I’m not allowed to form my own image of the characters. Of course, it makes sense to describe something naturally in the flow of the story, like “her long hair fluttered in the wind” or “she laughed so hard the borrowed bra snapped because her breasts didn’t really fit in it.”
Stories that are only about sex bore me. I just stop reading them.
I also really dislike huge chunks of text in italics that serve no purpose, or excessive bolding, or too many emdashes. It all needs to be functional, otherwise it just distracts me from the story.
