❓ PLP Inquires II ❓

Best Childhood
From my own childhood... The Muppet Movie

Why? It's the Muppets. And has some great songs and guest stars.

From my adulthood... My Neighbor Totoro

Well, I just love the Totoros themselves. They're magical and adorable. Just seeing them makes me smile. The story is about living simply, valuing your loved ones, and adapting to changing circumstances... at least to me.

I promise to come back and finish the rest.

WEEK TWO - MOVIE MARATHON

These don't have to be "the best" movies in anyone's eyes but yours! These are the movies that first spring to your mind when you see the genre, movies you can quote endlessly or watch anytime they come on TV (does that happen anymore?).
Give us the title and what you love about it. All gifs, trailers and scenes will be endlessly appreciated (and used as procrastination fodder) by yours truly! Obviously, you don't have to answer them all but I will judge you... just a little... if you don't.
This is so fun! I’m really glad I popped into your thread today!

It’s also so difficult to pick just one (or two) but I did my best. Off to see what other people have answered!
Best Action
Die Hard
Best Comedy
Welcome to the Dollhouse, one of my all time favorites in any genre. So dark, so funny, so good.

Best Historical
The Taste of Things

Best Horror/Thriller
Oddity was the first one to pop into my head right now.
Best Childhood
Karate Kid and Annie.
Best Romance
The Taste of Things goes here as well.
Best Fantasy/SciFi
The Arrival. Naturally, can’t beat linguistics. 🤓
Best Drama
Jeanne Dielman is so long but also so good and also definitely worth watching.

4 months 3 weeks 2 days is another good candidate.
Best Musical
Little Shop of Horrors is fun and appropriate for the season, so I’ll pick that.
Best Tearjerker
Amour made me cry so much when I saw it the first time, ugly cry.

https://youtu.be/F7D-Y3T0XFA?feature=shared

U are the Universe comes to mind from recent years.

Give us the title and what you love about it. All gifs, trailers and scenes will be endlessly appreciated (and used as procrastination fodder) by yours truly! Obviously, you don't have to answer them all but I will judge you... just a little... if you don't.
Here's where I'm going to be annoyed at my own rules of only one movie....
Best Action
Terminator 2
This is the genre I have the least experience with and that was my gut reaction but Mad Max: Fury Road is the right answer here.
Best Comedy
Jackass 3D
Ok ok ok listen!!! I know there are far better more high brow movies. I love those too. But laughs per minute? Funny every time? I won't be judged!
Best Historical
The Color Purple
"I never asked you for anything - not even your sorry ass hand in marriage!"
This is an all time favorite and one I can almost quote the whole way through. It's a perfect movie.
(Fried Green Tomatoes is a runner up. I'm a Southern girl. What can I say. 🤷‍♀️)
Best Horror/Thriller
The Shining is my comfort horror. It's terrifying and a visual masterpiece.
"Wendy! Darling....light of my life!"
Hereditary is the movie that upset me most deeply though.
Best Childhood
The Goonies is my all time favorite. Full of nostalgia, adventure, humor, excitement. Another one I can quote the whole way through.
Also a perfect score 🎶
Best Romance
The Princess Bride - I don't think I need to explain.
Best Fantasy/SciFi
Labyrinth and Willow are a tie here! (God I was born a nerd.)
Best Drama
Dead Poet's Society made a huge impression on me.
Best Musical
Hard to pick - I am a musical lover but there aren't many good movie adaptations.
Moulin Rouge is really the right answer.
Best Tearjerker
Steel Magnolias
This has always been a tearjerker but watching my parents lose a child - this will always hit way harder.
"I was there when that wonderful creature drifted into my life and I was there when she drifted out."
Goddamn Sally Fields 💗

All the rest of your picks are 💯

You’re going to have to judge me because my mind goes mostly blank when trying to think of these! Maybe I’ll think of some others later

Sci-fi - The Fifth Element
Such a good movie!!
Lord of the Rings, directors cut

"Mash ‘em, boil ‘em, cook ‘em in a stew!"

"There is no curse in Elvish, Entish, or the tongues of Men bad enough for such treachery"
This is, of course, the right answer. But I feel like these are more than movies.
2)Brick.

Joseph Gordon Levitt in a noire detective movie, only it's all high school kids. It's this bizarre mash up of two genres and yet it just works.
Ok, I've had this movie recommended to me MULTIPLE times! I need to watch it.
Three Amigos.
Ok this is much better and more dignified answer than mine.
Mad Max: Fury Road.
One of the single greatest achievements in cinema.

The Lighthouse

In general I hate dramatized real history. Can’t stand screenwriters and directors who fuck up real history in the name of drama. Give me an obviously fictional story that meticulously recreates how people actually lived. Eggers does this as well as anyone.

The Secret of Nimh

This movie is so beautifully animated. I love Bluth studios work.

LOTR
I would follow Viggo anywhere

Moulin Rouge
Dear sweet Ewan.
Are you my new twin????
"Mad Heidi"
You've rec'd this to me. I need to watch.
Correct.
“ An American Tale 2: Fieval Goes West” dunno why but that’s what popped in my head 🤷🏻‍♀️
There are NO cats in America!
I could easily come up with three or four answers for each one, but I'm going with what comes to mind in the moment. And trying not to repeat anyone else's answers.

Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2
Ahh! Another spectacular one!

From my adulthood... My Neighbor Totoro

Well, I just love the Totoros themselves. They're magical and adorable. Just seeing them makes me smile. The story is about living simply, valuing your loved ones, and adapting to changing circumstances... at least to me.

I love Totoro!

I can see this being on brand!
Best Musical
10 Things I Hate About You
(I don't really care for musicals....so I went with one that has a favorite song sequence...)
I really love this movie and I really struggle watching it after he passed.
Ugh The right answer!!
No! Stop! Listen... this what cishet white men COULD be doing with their time. Just saying......

WEEK THREE - THE BOOB TUBE

Why is it called that? Do you find TV has replaced movies for you?

WEEK THREE - THE BOOB TUBE

Why is it called that? Do you find TV has replaced movies for you?
I have no idea why it’s called that. TV has definitely replaced movies, I have no idea why. Maybe because I can convince it in bite sized pieces when I am time poor.
Tell me your favorites - do you relate? do you rewatch?
I recently started reading-watching ER when I finished The Pitt. It’s still great and enough time has passed that I don’t really remember too much of it.
do you wish you had more time for TV or spent less time in front of it? Do you stick to one type of TV or are you down for anything good?

I stick to the TV downstairs and I think it’s a Samsung Smart TV, but that’s not what you’re asking. 🤭

Comfort Show
At the moment I am sitting waiting for the series finale of The Summer I turned Pretty. 🙄🤭
UK version of The Office
I’ll go with The Pitt for a newer one that was really good. For a classic, The West Wing.

South Park
Childhood

WEEK THREE - THE BOOB TUBE

I just got to work and I have things I need to be doing. But this seems way more important at the moment.
Why is it called that? Do you find TV has replaced movies for you?
TV hasn't replaced movies for me, but it has stepped up its game over the past 20 years or so.

Tell me your favorites - do you relate? do you rewatch? do you wish you had more time for TV or spent less time in front of it? Do you stick to one type of TV or are you down for anything good?
80% of my job is done from home with something on tv in the background. If I really have to concentrate on work I'll put on something I've already seen a dozen times before so I don't have to pay too much attention.

Comfort Show
I'll re-watch this a lot when I'm feeling down and just need something that feels like home.
gilmore girls.gif

Parks and Rec. Back when Chris Pratt was likeable. I've also never related to a character more than Ben Wyatt. And I've never wanted to be a character more than Ron Swanson.
pretty dark haired women and breakfast food.gif

I watch a lot of historical dramas. This is hands down one of the absolute best out there.

rome title.jpg

Fantasy/SciFi
Once again, these are two very different genres!
For fantasy, I'll go with Xena: Warrior Princess. God, that show made me wish I could be a lesbian.
xena gabrielle onions.gif

For sci-fi there's no other choice for me than Doctor Who. God, that show makes me wish I could pull off hats.
fezzes are cool.jpg

The Legend of Vox Machina. Pays brilliant homage to all the classic archetypes of D&D classes (horny bard, not-too-smart barbarian, too-gentle druid), but does so lovingly in a way that each character shows growth from those cliches and gets a chance to shine.
vox machina still.jpg

Childhood
Favorite show from childhood? Or about childhood?
Either way, I think "The Wonder Years" has to be the way to go for this one. Also, the wifi here just ground down to a crawl, so no more .gifs or pics for my answers. :(

Horror/Thriller
My least favorite genre. Though there are a few good ones I like. "Midnight Mass" turned out to NOT just be a nice show about a church. But it was still pretty good and I've rewatched it a couple times.

Nostalgic
Oh, this might be the place for "The Wonder Years." But since I already used that one... I'll say "Newhart." It was must-watch tv in our house and took place in a town very much like where I grew up.

Action/Adventure
I have no idea what qualifies a show as "action/adventure" but if all it needs is a lot of shoot 'em-ups, then you can't go wrong with "Peaky Blinders."

Give me your absolute trashiest hook-up reality shows. I want a house of scantily-clad twenty-somethings, all just young, dumb, and full of cum. I want to see bad decisions being made for the absolute most selfish of reasons. Let me live vicariously through your drunken sluttiness! There are SO MANY shows to choose from that meet these requirements. First one off the top of my head is "Too Hot to Handle" so I'll go with that.

You had me at Gilmore Girls 😍

Also Dr Who.. and LVM

Ugh let’s make out and watch tv?

Okay, so, based on the movie one and this, I think I’d let Whiskeyjack pick what I watch next.

I watch movies more than I watch TV, I think. The TV might be on, but I don’t watch it very much. I go to film festivals, I watch at least one movie a week at home and I go to movies a couple of times a month, too. I find movies good for my concentration. When I watch a TV show, it’s always so easy for me to do something else while doing that, but when watching a movie, I never, okay, I rarely, multitask.

Gilmore Girls is the only thing I can answer here. I watch (and quote) it all the time! My sort of dream came true and J (my fella of very many years) started to watch it with me after years and years of only watching an ep here and another there. Now we’re watching it together and it’s so much fun, also interesting to hear his thoughts on some matters, as he’s seeing most of it for the first time. The downside of it is that I can no longer just put it on in the background whenever I want, because we watch it with J.

Fun fact: I got to use “when woman gives birth to a crack baby, you don’t buy her a puppy” line at work last week. Oy, with the poodles already!
Schitt’s Creek. My first instinct was Parks and Rec, but I don’t want to look like I’m intentionally copying Whiskeyjack…
Anne with an E was good and the first one that I thought of.
Fantasy/SciFi
Battlestar Galactica, the 2000’s RDM version. I can’t even begin to describe how much the series means to me.
Nick Knatterton, episode 1 in the link.

Edit: I just have to leave a link to the episode 2 as well, because it’s gold.

Childhood
Also Nick Knatterton😁
Horror/Thriller
I don’t think I’ve ever really watched anything in this category, except American Horror Story season 1.
Nostalgic
Matlock! My mom always watched it on Saturdays after sauna and I got to watch with her.
Action/Adventure
Another genre I don’t really watch. So maybe Black Doves? It’s the only one I can think of that fits the genre.
Also not my genre, but as a kid, I immensely enjoyed watching Fort Boyard on TV5. A French channel. In French. I didn’t understand what they said, but it hardly mattered.

I’ll be honest, I’m not a big fan of “peak tv” I think in general it’s a poor medium for long narratives. The “jumping the shark” phenomenon affects almost every successful show sooner or later. Die young or live to become that which you hate or some shit. Anyway.

I've decided that you have excellent taste in everything. I watched the Nick Knatterton cartoons you linked to. My first thought was, "this narrator's German must be really terrible - I can understand almost everything he's saying." My second thought was, "I need to learn mouth-to-mouth resuscitation."
