I’m crap at answering anything like this because suddenly any information about what I like just disappears from my brain! But we’ll give it a shot.
you.

A song that give you energy/makes you dance
Lately it’s been “Shotgun” by George Ezra but “Danza Kuduro” by Don Omar also always makes me bop
A song for being angry
“Abcdefu” - Gayle
A song for falling in love
“Cry to Me” by Solomon Burke
*not for the lyrics of the song but I always imagined sexy slow dancing in the kitchen with someone to this song while dinner is cooking - and that sounds like falling in love to me *
A song for being heartbroken
“Worn” by Tenth Avenue North - man that song will always be a hard one
A song for reminiscing
“Crash and Burn” by Savage Garden
This one holds a special place in my heart, always.

A song that makes you feel seen

A song that give you energy/makes you dance

To me, that’s two different things. For energy, either NIN’s Pretty Hate Machine (the whole album) for aggressive get-it-DONE energy or Chuck Mangione’s Legend of the One Eyed Sailor for less aggressive but still high energy. Dancing really depends a lot on the style of dance, anything from Concrete Blonde’s Bloodletting to Oi or Ska or jazz or blues or…

For a psychopathic singular answer - The Time Warp from Rocky Horror

A song for being angry
NIN or some more uptempo Metallica,
A song for falling in love
That’d be more a place-marker for having fallen in love, an ‘Our Song" kinda thing. Memory queue, if you will.

A song for being heartbroken

Hrmmm… while the former ‘our song’s of prior loves can get to me on occasion, I can’t think of a good example otherwise.

A song for reminiscing

Beetles’ Norwegian Wood or Eleanor Rigby

A song that makes you feel seen

Not sure what you mean. Something that shows others have had similar experiences? Someone picking me out of a crowd? (Not that I can think of good songs for either of those!)

A song to make love to

Ravel’s Bolero is a fave

A song to party to

Engine Ears’ stuff comes to mind - electroworldbeat with lots of fun oddities.

A song for a road trip

This Is the Song That Never Ends. Henry the Eighth. 99 Bottles of Beer. Etc…

A song that comforts you
Mangione, featuring Esther Satterfield - Land of Make Believe. Also an energy song!

Thanks for you answers so far! I think the answers are very telling and very interesting. I'm trying to listen to a few of everyone's suggestions, especially if I've never heard it before!

This mix is singular to today and I think I could give you 10 songs in each category. But this is a snapshot of me tonight.
A song that give you energy/makes you dance
Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars
This song is a little bit of a guilty pleasure for me. It has such nostalgia for me as well as it was everywhere when several things in my life were going like perfectly. Plus it's just a total bop.

🎵

Girls hit your hallelujah (Woo)
Girls hit your hallelujah (Woo)
Girls hit your hallelujah (Woo)
'Cause uptown funk gon' give it to you (Woo)
('Cause uptown funk gon' give it to you)
'Cause uptown funk gon' give it to you

Saturday night and we in the spot
A song for being angry
You Outta Know by Alanis
I mean this song is a classic for a reason and it's specifics hit so perfectly to a women's rage at being discarded without a second thought. Even if you aren't angry, it's the perfect song to scream sing in your car.

🎵

An older version of me
Is she perverted like me?
Would she go down on you in a theatre?
Does she speak eloquently?
And would she have your baby?

I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother
A song for falling in love
Work Song by Hozier
This song feels like a lover's sigh. It's all melty and sweet and it makes me want to grin while I kiss.

🎵

There's nothin' sweeter than my baby
I'd never want once from the cherry tree
'Cause my baby's sweet as can be
She'd give me toothaches just from kissin' me

A song for being heartbroken
If The World Was Ending by JP Saxe & Julia Michaels
This song sums up the worst part of heartbreak. Having someone you once loved and knew everything about suddenly become a total stranger and also hoping that they think of you fondly. This song makes me cry.

I was distracted and in traffic
I didn't feel it when the earthquake happened
But it really got me thinkin', were you out drinkin'?
Were you in the living room, chillin' watchin' television
It's been a year now, think I've figured out how
How to let you go and let communication die out
I know, you know, we know, you weren't down for forever and it's fine

I know, you know, we know, we weren't meant for each other and it's fine

A song for reminiscing
Massachusetts by Jensen McRae
A song about the feeling of nostalgia vs bringing me to a moment of nostalgia. This song makes me think of the permanent affects people have on us forever and the little things we see that used to have no meaning and are now transmuted into something more because of someone that meant a lot.

When someone tells me they're from Massachusetts
Now I always ask, "What part?"
I wonder if you kept the pilgrim ashtray
If it's still propped up on your bar cart
Could make a grand off of the chain you bought me
But goddamn, it's not for sale
When someone asks me who's my favorite Batman

I'll think of you and say, "Christian Bale"
A song that makes you feel seen
Secrets by Mary Lambert
This song plucks so many things I find specific to me (good and bad) and mixes them into a big tasty salad of self acceptance.

I can't think straight, I'm so gay
Sometimes I cry a whole day
I care a lot, use an analog clock
And never know when to stop
And I'm passive aggressive
I'm scared of the dark and the dentist
I love my butt and won't shut up

And I never really grew up
A song to make love to
Gasoline by Audioslave
This is the only category where I think lyrics are pretty unimportant. Probably best you aren't singing along while riding his face. You just need a vibe and good bass line.

🎵

Yeah, I'm burning that gasoline
Yeah, I'm burning that gasoline

A song to party to
Fight For Your Right by The Beastie Boys
I feel like this one is self explanatory?

Your pops caught you smoking, and he says, "No way"
That hypocrite smokes two packs a day
Man, living at home is such a drag
Now your mom threw away your best porno mag (bust it)

You gotta fight for your right to party
A song for a road trip
Grundy County Auction by John Michael Montgomery
Alright my country roots are showing here but there is no more fun that driving with your friends with the windows down and trying to land every work in the auctioneer's patter. (The music video is so cheesy! 😆)

When I said
"Hey pretty lady, won't you give me a sign?
I'd give anything to make you mine o' mine
I'll do your biddin' and be at your beck and call"
Yeah, I've never seen anyone lookin' so fine
Man, I gotta have her she's a one of a kind
I'm goin' once, goin' twice, I'm sold
To the lady in the second row
She's an eight, she's a nine, she's a ten I know
She's got ruby red lips, blonde hair, blue eyes

And I'm about to bid my heart goodbye
A song that comforts you
You Might Not Like Her by Maddie Zahm
This song is in respectful conversation with her past self. I love it and I relate to it. It's unashamed of her past self while still being so proud of her current version.

Someday you'll kiss a girl and you'll panic
Some guy'll break your heart and you'll feel manic
Then you'll learn to let people have their opinions
And talk about your traumas and like the body you live in
Someday you'll learn to keep your own secrets
Say you're doing okay and really mean it
You'll lose your faith a bit and question if she's you
For a while, you might not like her, but I do

WEEK ONE - MIXED TAPE (MUSIC)
This is your personal mixed tape. Choose one song for each category. You can post/link a video if you want but you have give us a few words about why this song is significant to you.

A song that give you energy/makes you dance
Madonna - Into the groove.

This song has spoken to me from the very first time I heard it - as someone who has natural rhythm, and dances freely, and couldn’t care less what I look like, but how the music makes me feel…

‘Only when I’m dancing can I feel this free’
A song for being angry
I can’t think of one song - I tried to think back to when I was at my angriest, and while I did play music, and shouted it all out of my system, there were so many, and they all made me not angry….
A song for falling in love
Donna Summer - This time I know it’s for real…

this appears to be my theme song to my love life. Endlessly optimistic, failing to be noticed by the one I want, and yet still every time, I feel that this time… yada yada yada 🤷‍♀️
A song for being heartbroken
Alison Moyet - All cried out

This is a good one to belt out, and get your defiance on. This got a lot of play..

‘You took a whole lot of lovin’ for a handful of nothin’

‘Take back your cold and empty heart’
A song for reminiscing
This could be taken one of 2 ways - a song that reminds you of certain times… or a song that evokes you to remember certain times. the first I could never narrow down to one song. I get transported back to different timed by so many different songs.

Kirsty MacColl - Days

I know The Kinks did the original but I love the KM version - it has a more… thoughtful slightly melancholy feel to it, and it can be interpreted in so many ways.
A song that makes you feel seen
The Primitives - Crash

I think of this as my theme song - to sing to myself, to sing to others. I turn the volume on and just flip out, bouncing around the place. I think my record is playing it about 17 times in a row, till my kids came and told me to STFU. Hehe.
A song to make love to
Bread - Make it with you

It’s been a long time since I made love. Sex has been had, and I’m not complaining about that. But making love… very different - I think I like the words and tone of this one fit me well.
A song to party to
The Killers - Mr Brightside

This is a guaranteed favourite at parties for ALL ages, and for everyone to be singing all the words and jumping up and down - great sone.
A song for a road trip
E.L.O. - Mr Blue Sky

This is a great song to add to your playlist for a road trip - everyone can sing along, and it’s hopeful. And it’s requested by my kids all the time!
A song that comforts you
Andrew Gold - Thank you for being a friend

Theme to the Golden Girls - it makes me smile and gives me good memories. Like a warm blanket…..

"September" - Earth, Wind, and Fire
A total bop!
"Wicked Game" - Chris Isaak
This song has every man in a death grip hehe
Spice Girls Spice Up Your Life
So many catchy little pops songs throughout my life . But my Spice Girl fandom has been the source of a number of particularly good memories
I can't argue a bit!

Halestorm: I Am The Fire

A song for reminiscing

Johnny Cash: The Highway Patrolman
(
)
A lot of excellent choices!
Ankles - Lucy Dacus
Oh hi, hello Twin! I can't argue with a single choice but THIS song was new to me and I'm in love!
“I’m Gonna Be” (500 miles) by The Proclaimers

“Dreams” by The Cranberries
Both of these would be on my road trip list.
For a psychopathic singular answer - The Time Warp from Rocky Horror
I'm in the market for psychopaths! And even reading the words is an instant earworm.
Andrew Gold - Thank you for being a friend

Theme to the Golden Girls - it makes me smile and gives me good memories. Like a warm blanket…..
SOOO many good songs on this list but this one made me smile real big!

WEEK TWO - MOVIE MARATHON
Best Action

The Rock.

Winners go home and fuck the prom queen. Even if they're Nicholas Cage. I love that is a sneaky James Bond sequel if you're paying attentiom.

Best Comedy
Anything Mel Brooks. Today I'll say Young Frankenstein. Fucking classic man.

Best Historical
The King's Speech.

I love this movie so much. It's touching without being schmaltzy.
Best Horror/Thriller
Halloween. The original slasher film, 'nuff said.
Best Childhood

The Land Before Time. Because dinosaurs are awesome.
Best Romance

The Notebook. Rachel McAdams steals my damn heart every damn time.
Best Fantasy/SciFi

What? I'm a huge nerd? Ok, Star Wars. If I have to explain you won't get it.
Best Drama

The Godfather. I'm not even a huge fan of the genre and I could watch it a couple of times a year.
Best Musical

I don't watch many musicals. So my answer may be cliche, but I'm going to go with Moulin Rouge. Because Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.

Honorable mention to Newsies, which is a fantastic film from my childhood.
Best Tearjerker

Hmm. I cry at everything, so i'm not even sure what qualifies here. Old Yeller? That's just traumatic.

And they don't really fit any of the categories, but I want to take a moment to hype two of my favorite movies of all time: 1)Lucky Number Slevin.

It's a slick crime/mobster dramedy with Josh Hartnett, Lucy Liu, Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley, Stanley Tucci and others. Quotable as fuck. If you know what a Kansas City Shuffle is you're on the right track.

2)Brick.

Joseph Gordon Levitt in a noire detective movie, only it's all high school kids. It's this bizarre mash up of two genres and yet it just works.

WEEK TWO - MOVIE MARATHON

Best Action
Mad Max: Fury Road.
One of the single greatest achievements in cinema.

Best Comedy

Better off Dead

Maybe not best but a personal favorite
Best Historical
The Lighthouse

In general I hate dramatized real history. Can’t stand screenwriters and directors who fuck up real history in the name of drama. Give me an obviously fictional story that meticulously recreates how people actually lived. Eggers does this as well as anyone.

Best Horror/Thriller
The Handmaiden.

Little recency bias since I just rewatched this but it’s a fucking amazing thriller and one the best movies I’ve ever seen. I love Oldboy but I think this is his best work.
Best Childhood
The Secret of Nimh

This movie is so beautifully animated. I love Bluth studios work.

A thing of beauty. And oozes fucking cool.

WEEK TWO - MOVIE MARATHON

These don't have to be "the best" movies in anyone's eyes but yours! These are the movies that first spring to your mind when you see the genre, movies you can quote endlessly or watch anytime they come on TV (does that happen anymore?).

So - I'm going with my own criteria for this. We recently got a game called "Cinemantics" ($19.99 on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/FITZ-Cinemantics-Adult-Party-Game/dp/B0DYLBNXFY)- which is basically just a bunch of cards with different movie tropes on them. There's a G-rated version and an R-rated version (the R-rated version can be played as a drinking game). We've had a lot of fun with this game, mostly watching movies we've already seen a thousand times before. So my choices will be whichever movie in each genre pops into my head that I think would score high in hitting as many of the tropes as possible.

Best Action
"Mad Heidi"
In addition to being a world class B-action movie, it stars Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers), who my wife met at a horror movie convention last year. She goes to a lot of those conventions and meets a LOT of horror actors, and her experience with Casper Van Dien was the absolute BEST. She's very shy, but she went up to him, said Hello, and added, "my very Swiss leader," (which is how he's addressed in "Mad Heidi"), and gave him the salute he gets in the movie. He LIT THE FUCK UP and was SO EXCITED that someone had seen that movie because he had SO MUCH FUN making it. Everyone else in line wanted to talk about Starship Troopers (because why wouldn't they?), and he's happy to talk about that movie too, but when he got the chance to talk about "Mad Heidi," he literally talked my wife's ear off for, like, 10 minutes straight. Then he started gushing about his family and how proud he is of his daughter (she played the cheerleader, Chrissy, who gets killed in S.4 Ep.1 of Stranger Things, which is the murder everyone blames Eddie Munson for). He gave my wife lots of hugs, took lots of pictures with her, and probably would've kept on talking if the convention staff hadn't pointed out there was a line behind her and he needed to move it along. Anyway, 11,000,000/10 for best fan experience anywhere. "Mad Heidi." It's a hoot. Watch the trailer.

Best Comedy
"Monty Python's Life of Brian."
I swear to God, this film got me through Seminary. I still reference it in way too many sermons.
hes not the messiah.gif

Best Historical
"Braveheart"
Yes, it's a Mel Gibson project and he's ew. And it's got some gaping historical inaccuracies. But on the other hand, it's 3 hours of Scots cracking English skulls.
Five stars.

Best Horror/Thriller
Easily my least favorite genre. But I do like one!
"Army of Darkness"

Best Childhood
"Labyrinth"
sexuality labyrinth.jpg

Best Romance
"Sense and Sensibility"
There's a point when Edward is talking about his ambitions (or perhaps lack thereof), and waxing poetic about his ideal of the simple life. It's a sentiment I find entirely too familiar.

Best Fantasy/SciFi
These are two distinct categories, I think.
Best Fantasy has to be the entirety of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Don't ask me to pick just one of them. I won't do it and you can't make me.
But when the Rohirrim arrive at the Pelennor Fields and the warhorns blow... God damn chills every single time.
https://youtu.be/rFO94ruQjyA?si=-WtKBNricSVK7jte

Best SciFi...
"The Fifth Element"
my favorite.gif

Best Drama
"Almost Famous"
This is just one of those movies that sucks me in and makes me watch it every time it's on. It's just start to finish so fucking good.
hold me closer almost famous.gif

Best Musical
I'm gonna need to choose about 30 different movies for this category. I love musicals. But the first one that comes to mind that I'd want to play Cinemantics with...
"Little Shop of Horrors."
Perfect film adaptation of a stage musical from start to finish. Perfect casting. Perfect music. Perfectly unserious. Love it. It also provides one of the .gifs I use most often on Lit and in life.
feed me.gif

Best Tearjerker
No .gifs. No clips. No stills. No jokes.
"Bridge to Terabithia" fucking wrecked me when I read it, then wrecked me again when I watched it.

You’re killing me smalls! This having to pick just one is torture!!!
I need a google search function for my own likes …
Also, I’m shit at gif linking so you’ll just have to judge me 🤷🏻‍♀️
I eagerly await my punishment 😏
Best Action
I’m gonna go with “The Rock” because it’s what popped in my head and I just watched it recently.
Plus who doesn’t like quoting it?
“Your best? Losers always whine about ‘their best’, winners go home and fuck the prom queen”
“Carla was the prom queen”
“Really??”

So good

Best Comedy
My gut instinct is “Monty Python and The Holy Grail” , just a classic.
But “Nacho Libre” is a guilty pleasure comedy for me too 👀

Best Historical
Can I pick a mini series?? Because you really can’t beat “Band of Brothers” it’s amazing
If not then I’ll go with “The Patriot”

Best Horror/Thriller
Horror for me will always be “House on Haunted Hill” because it was the first horror film that scared the fuck out of teenage SNG 😳
But equally as horrifying for me is “The conjuring” , can’t sleep after watching this one and have to watch cartoons before bed …

Best Childhood
“ An American Tale 2: Fieval Goes West” dunno why but that’s what popped in my head 🤷🏻‍♀️
Also note worthy - all classic Disney for me.

Best Romance
“You’ve Got Mail” it’s not the greatest romance movie ever but it’s one of my favs, along side of Keira Knightly’s “Pride and Prejudice”
Edited to add “When Harry Met Sally” definitely top 3 for me!!!

Best Fantasy/SciFi
“Fifth Element”
Always incredible

Best Drama
“The Martian” .. ok so it’s not a classic, but it’s good!
Best Musical
“Rent” will always be my fav, it’s the first musical that really hooked me in.
Best Tearjerker
Everything makes me cry these days 🤦🏻‍♀️
Let’s see …
I’ll go with “Steel Magnolias” because it always gets me

In general I hate dramatized real history. Can’t stand screenwriters and directors who fuck up real history in the name of drama. Give me an obviously fictional story that meticulously recreates how people actually lived. Eggers does this as well as anyone.

The Handmaiden.

Little recency bias since I just rewatched this but it’s a fucking amazing thriller and one the best movies I’ve ever seen. I love Oldboy but I think this is his best work.

The Secret of Nimh

This movie is so beautifully animated. I love Bluth studios work.

In the Mood For Love

A thing of beauty. And oozes fucking cool.

LOTR
I would follow Viggo anywhere

Columbus

My favorite movie

Moulin Rouge
Dear sweet Ewan.

All of Us Strangers

I can’t speak to the queer experience at the heart of this movie but simply as someone who’s lost their parents this movie utterly wrecked me in the best and worst ways.

I want my two dollars!

Oooh, I forgot about Rent! It’s my favorite musical of all time. But I can’t endorse that as the best musical movie because the stage version is so much better.
I’ve only ever seen small stage performances, but the original broadway soundtrack was the first musical soundtrack I owned and played over and over until my mother yelled at me singing some “inappropriate lyrics” 👀

WEEK TWO - MOVIE MARATHON

These don't have to be "the best" movies in anyone's eyes but yours! These are the movies that first spring to your mind when you see the genre, movies you can quote endlessly or watch anytime they come on TV (does that happen anymore?).
Give us the title and what you love about it. All gifs, trailers and scenes will be endlessly appreciated (and used as procrastination fodder) by yours truly! Obviously, you don't have to answer them all but I will judge you... just a little... if you don't.
I could easily come up with three or four answers for each one, but I'm going with what comes to mind in the moment. And trying not to repeat anyone else's answers.

Best Action
Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2

A revenge thriller with kick-ass women and a solid soundtrack.

Best Comedy
Shaun of the Dead

Volume One of the Three Colours Cornetto Trilogy

Best Historical
Elizabeth

Cate Blanchett. Tudor England. Great supporting cast.

Best Horror/Thriller
The Others

Gothic horror set in WWII England. Gothic is my favorite horror genre and I love a period piece.

Lit is telling me I can only put up to five media files in a post, so I guess I will continue later.
