DanielQSteele1 a very popular author on this site has passed away. Here is a link to his obituary: Should his work be honored by continuing his unfinished stories or should his characters be further developed elsewhere? I don't want to speak out of turn because I don't know proper author etiquette but I would very much appreciate any thoughtful comments.

I would love to see a story contest in the Loving Wives category to remember and celebrate DQS. He will be missed

It's not a matter of etiquette. The site (and worldwide copyright law) don't allow you to use anyone else's characters and situations without permission, whether or not they're alive (until the 75 year copyright expires), with certain narrow legal exceptions.

He published some of the same stories on both Lit and Amaz*n. On Amaz*n, the author used the name Daniel Quenten Steele and his real name .

Annie, from everything I've seen on this site, and having contacted authors who have continued or rewritten other authors' works, the site's policy is that copyright issues are between authors. If DQS doesn't respond to a request to continue one of his stories (and he obviously won't), Literotica will publish the continuation.

That being said, I think trying to get authors to continue DQS's stories is an inappropriate way to mark his passing.

These are continuations where the author states at the beginning that it's a continuation or rewrite of an author's story. There's no slipping through the cracks.

Yes, you can interpret the site rules to support the idea that the site won't publish stories that are derivative of other authors' works. But that same interpretation implies that you can't use song lyrics from commercial songs, and we all know that can be done.

All you've got to support your ideas is handwaving. I've got evidence.

Post this in the Authors' Hangout and see what response you get. An overwhelming "FUCK NO!"

If you don't have the original author's permission, you have no right to use their characters, their world or their plotlines. Make your own.

I completely disagree. I would be flattered if other authors liked my stories and characters enough to continue them after my demise.

Do you think Arthur Conan Doyle is down there in Hell shaking his fist at all the other authors who continue to write Sherlock Holmes stories? I doubt it. And how about HP Lovecraft? He encouraged other authors to use his gods and monsters in their own stories. Even while he was still alive!

We are discussing two different things. Do I think authors shouldn't write continuations of DQS's stories? That's up to the individual author. It's not going to hurt DQS's feelings if someone does so.

But the OP was suggesting that authors continue DQS's stories as a way of honoring him. DQS had ten years from when he stopped publishing to his death to encourage people to continue his stories, and I don't see any evidence that DQS wanted that to be done. I don't think having many authors continue his stories is an appropriate way of honoring him without some evidence that that's the way he wanted to be honored.

On the flip side, authors had ten years to continue DQS's stories while he was alive. They could have asked his permission. DQS probably wasn't responding to PM's, but he might have. If authors weren't interested during that time to write a continuation of one of his stories, I don't think it's appropriate to push them into writing a continuation now. Let authors write what they want to write.

As people say, there has been lots of time between his stories and his death. Neither he now other authors that we know of have stepped in to continue his work. Maybe that was intentional from him. It is best to honour his stories as they were.

Any tribute shouldn't continue his story. It should understand it's subject matter and make new stories from it. It can be inspired by the author. That is a compliment while never coming into the realm of plagiarism.
