No one that I know of wants the mentally ill to have access to firearms and those that have been so adjudicated by the courts or qualified commissions ARE prohibited. The issue is "How far do you want to stretch the definition of "mentally defective"?" And then the question of "Who gets to decide?" has to be answered.

Other countries have figured out how to deal with restricting access to guns in a reasonable manner, and their approaches have resulted in much lower rates of gun related violence than we have in the USA.
