I will wager that people here have no idea how much work is involved in judging melons. They had to be submitted in pairs so there was a lengthy visual inspection to identify any differences. Perhaps unsurprisingly, almost all contestants had one bigger than the other. Most arrived wrapped so we had to unwrap them all and let them rest a few minutes in the fresh air.Why doesn't that surprise me.....
Then we had to wash them thoroughly and pat them dry before we performed the touch test. We had to feel how round they were and that the flesh was resistant to finger pressure. We also had to check for any areas that were hard to the touch.
And finally, there was the taste test...
Hard work, but I'm nothing if not thorough!
