I had just taken off in an airliner from Fresno bound for Hawaii when the pilot notified all on board that the earthquake had just struck. It wasn't until we landed in Hawaii that we learned how severe the quake had been.

People on the street were freaking out, especially with the aftershocks. They’d just start running in any particular direction.
