Momma has decided that her Subaru portable Gen with a suicide cord ain’t cutting it anymore and wants to go whole hog with a total system. I’ve heard mixed reviews on them, but that was some time ago. The one positive is that it would run her AC. The Subaru only runs the lights and outlets. Her power lines are above ground so they tend to lose power a lot longer than we do with buried lines. Last big hurricane power was out over two weeks for her street. We were up and running in 16 hrs.

Oh, did I mention she’s 82? Momma gets what she wants at this point…I just want to give her good advice as to any downsides. Thanks in advance for any gouge!

Taking her out today for lunch and a visit to her brother. We’re going to the local Generac store to see what they got. Hurricane season isn’t really the time to be shopping but we’ve had so many other distractions this year.

Generac is a good brand. You can also get them hooked up to natural gas which would probably be cheaper and easier if you have natural gas... usually about 6 weeks with permits, electrician and gas company hook ups. Cycles once a week and you can have the monitor app on your I phone.

I think the Generac systems are OK. At the price point they're at, they're hard to beat. But I don't have actual experience with one yet, although I am looking at them for backup here. I'd go propane, and pipe it up to our 1000 gallon tank. (No gas to worry about going bad, etc.) I'm still young enough that wrangling out the 8KW unit and cord isn't that hard, yet...

We have a Kohler, and it has never failed us in the 12 years we’ve had it and we’ve been through some lengthy power outages. Katerina almost 2 weeks. (In old house). In Ida, which I think was 2022, we lost power for nine days. Every so often we have an outage for several hours up to a day. It just happens in these parts.

Having a house generator is the way to go. No muss, no fuss. 1000 gallon propane tank.

The only thing I would say is make sure it’s maintained regularly or do it yourself. A lot of people forget it’s an engine.

I have noticed that after a week of running straight, you need to add oil! And make sure you change the oil - at least once a year since it does a self check and runs for 10 minutes every week.

I had an eventful day. It started by getting woken up at 0800. Seems the neighbors across the street are having their roof done. So a big-ass truck rolled up on our sleepy street all air braking and back-up beeping.

I learned what the local ordinance said about noise when work began to repair after a house fire in the structure behind mine. So early - even on weekends!!

It's small men (and women) who seek to put down others with arrogance. Then, they're pissed when they're shown up.

It may will depend where she is. You need to supply fuel and for how long would she need it? I know they have different engines. I have a friend a few blocks away and she has not run it for years, some one should maintain it and exercise it. There is a solar company down here (FLA) advertising never lose power so I guess they have batteries. That would have advantages 365, especially here in FL. I have them and get "credits" for the times i supply power to the grid. I have not heard anything bad about Generac and they put a transfer switch in for when the power goes out.

Good gouge @subdudeme13 . I thought we had a Generac store here in town but it turns out the big store is a couple three hrs away. Several people sell them in town so called and made an appointment for someone to come out and give us a quote.

FTR, the gal was really talking me off the Generac’s and pushing a Kohler or Briggs unit. When I asked she said they saw a lot of warranty claims for the Gen’s. Not so much Kohler or Briggs. She also said they’re very loud. The quietest is a Cummings unit, but they’re in the 48kw range and meant for huge houses. The other two were quieter also.

The big cost is how much pipe and line they have to run. Fifty feet can add a couple of thousand so looks like we’re going to look for a closer area. The Kohler doesn’t have an auto test feature, so like you said, it needs to be run or tested every few months I’m guessing. They also suggested two 120 gal tanks. Having gas logs we’ve always talked about POUNDS in tanks (100lb or she has 300lb) so that’ll need to be squared away.

Anyhow, looks like it’s a go. Hurricane party at Momma’s!

Yeah, if I was home all the time I wouldn’t worry so much, but she’s 82 and can’t be hauling a small gen from the shed to the porch. Plus, I like the idea of her having her HVAC on this unit.

The last big hurricane they were without power for a couple of weeks. She’s getting too frail to sweat it out. I have a Honda 2200i….run the fridge, fans, lamps, Xbox and TeeVee….oh, and a blender…good to go!

That was the first thing they asked…”Is she on gas”…unfortunately, her house is all electric, so we’ll need LP cylinders. The good news is the company we both use is the one this Generator company is using and promoting. A couple of good deals for leasing the tanks or buying them outright.

Change the fucking oil. It doesn't run enough to boil the condensation out of the crankcase, but an oil change will take care of that. Do it once a year or as the manufacturer recommends.
