Day 22: A song from the 80's (summer)

Hoodoo Guru's 1983 'Tojo' referenced two key summer events in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. The first was the bombing of Darwin by 188 Japanese aircraft on 19 February 1942, following the Pearl Harbor raids and resulting in great loss of life. Over 100 further raids followed, but despite that, the feared land invasion didn't happen despite Japan's occupation of Indonesia just to the north. The second event was the destruction of Darwin on 24/25 December 1974 by Tropical Cyclone Tracy (which I've referenced in one of my stories ('Remembering The Storm')). In the song, the singer's girlfriend Tracy is in a bad and goes whistling off to wreak destruction...

Tracy, Tracy was angry
A bad mood, a bad mood
I told her that it's an ill wind
Blows no good, blows no good
Then she told me
"Tojo never made it
Tojo never made it to Darwin"

Peking Man - Room That Echoes
(RIP Margaret Urlich)
A quintessential Kiwi summer song from the 80s is "Room That Echoes" by Peking Man, released in 1985. It evokes memories of hot summers, dying grass, and the Caroline Bay Carnival in Timaru.It was a regular on the radio during that time, particularly in Timaru, making it a familiar summer soundtrack for many.

Fun fact I'm sure you already know;
when Kokomo hit #1 on the charts in November 1988 it was the longest span ever between #1 hits. The last one before that... Good Vibrations in December 1966
