New home page, new lady!

Also what is the 'optional and free' membership?

Are "others" paying for better lit membership?
I assume they mean that anyone may browse the stories and other pages of the site without having to sign up. Although they might be forced to change that at some point, like so many other sites that provide non-puritanical content.

When I advertise my stories on Bluesky, I always make sure to highlight that anyone can read, anyone can vote, anyone can comment. Nowadays that's a rarity.

I dunno, Lit strikes me as somewhat more restrictive on the voting and commenting front than some other big sites. They sweep votes regularly, and comments have some minimal level of filtering for bots (which might apply to votes as well). Lots of other sites seem to welcome fake engagement more than Lit does!

I was pleasantly surprised when I logged in on my phone. Looks really good and inviting. Also, no more zooming way in to find the login button is a massive plus.

I'll second the accessibility comment - black on white is better for my eyes and contrast. I'm using a browser extension to get the contrast and text size a little larger.

Note that if you're logged in, the new homepage respects your choice of Reading Theme, meaning it will show as white-on-black if you picked the dark one.

Oh that's quite nice! Accessible contrast by default would still be preferable, since many people don't log into an account to read. But that's still a useful affordance!

*Sigh*

That lady is yet another plot bunny I'm going to murder and freeze. This website forcing me to start a bunch of stories and never actually finish one so I'm just not delivering anything. Now I have a new teacher character I don't know where to put...

What she said.
I'm pretty sure it just means that anyone can read any story on Lit without an account, but that by creating a free account you get to do things like post on the forums, make reading lists, and start publishing. Just like it's always been!
