I live in the Pacific Northwest. Trans rights utopia. My only issue with your statement is that no, there are not more parental rights here. Parents are assumed to be the enemy. If my child is transitioning socially, its assumed that I don't love them, that I'll hate & reject them. The schools have rights to not inform me at all. I love my kids, I want to support them in any way I can. Why keep me in the dark when telling me Tommy is now going Tina, could be extremely helpful in her feeling not isolated at home???

In addition, the laws are written in such a way that it makes for a groomers paradise. No, I am not saying Trans people are groomers. I am saying that groomers can hide behind these laws. We tell our kids that adults who want you to keep secrets are not safe, but then adults keep secrets, and even tell kids not to tell their parents? It's a mixed message. (For context, my spouse was a detective with our PD for 15+ years, we're hyper aware of how kids are taken advantage of)

Let's use the example of an at risk youth. Not great home life, etc. They're groomed by an older person who showers them with attention & affection, convinces them that they need to be together. Under our laws, all the kid has to do is claim they're trans. No proof, no doctor note, no psych eval, nothing. A child can check themselves into foster care or a host home (which the groomer can easily provide), and simply claim that their parents dont/won't support gender affirming care. It's a lie. But, its a lie they can hide behind. And no one will touch it or question it because it's such a hot button issue. I mean, look at this forum. No one wants to have a nuanced discussion. Just assume the worst of eachother, mud sling & name call. Now, try bei g a social worker and calling bullshit when your job is at stake.

It's a similar issue in women's prisons. I have an interesting family. Some are great, and some seem prison bound from childhood. One such loved one is serving time, and under our self ID laws, a man has claimed to be trans and was transfered to her prison. No GAC, no HRT before conviction for crimes against women. She's been assaulted & harassed, as have many others. Their pleas fall on deaf ears. Any investigation is being blocked. Again, Google it. Do trans women belong in women's prisons, probably. However, the same laws that protect them are just as easily exploited.

My point is, this issue is not nearly as cut & dry as we'd like it to be. We can love & support our trans kids, family, and community, while also acknowledging that there are issues with the laws as currently written.

Then "all the kid has to do is claim they're trans" makes no sense in context. It would be no use to a groomer -- if the kid just says they're gay, no public authority, nowadays, would send them to reparative therapy. And groomers do not exist anyway.
