Nipple tape, as seen in some BDSM videos

Got a question: In some videos, mostly BDSM-type or Femdom, I'll see women with what appears to be two pieces of electrical tape arranged in an "X" on their nipples.

What is the purpose of this? Is it just the visual? Or is there a tactile/sensory reason for this? Tried it a few times with the hubby over the years. While the visual is hot, in terms of sensation, it did nothing for me. Kind of interfered with my enjoyment, really. I know some women have nipples with the sensitivity set on "prepetually high." Is it to prevent an orgasm being triggered before they're ready for it?

I used electrical tape. I chose very poorly. Whatever they are using, it's most likely not electrical tape! That stuff is almost waterproof! Though ... maybe those ladies are tougher than me?

'Bondage tape' is less sticky than electrical tape and the like, and doesn't really hurt when removed.

I think the Xs are just for the image, though they always make me think of a noughts-and-crosses game. The stuff works well for tying limbs together or to beds, though.
