Prime Minister Mark Carney says he wants Canada to sign onto a new European defence rearmament plan. Retired general Tom Lawson, former chief of the defence staff for the Canadian Armed Forces, says the move is a signal to the Trump administration that Canada has defence options beyond the United States.

Canada looking to sign on to European defence rearmament plan by July 1st
$1.25 trillion of defence spending over next 5 years - Canada is lookimg to strategically realign
Alignment with European defense industry rather than American
Shift from American to European and Asian-Pacific
Cdn PM seems to be preparing Canadians for significant investments in defense

Everyone is cosplaying breaking up until midterms or until he strokes out.

Nobody makes better killing machines than the Romans.

I mean the Americans.

Great to see Canada and NATO allies in Europe finally stepping up their defense budgets. Long overdue. Thanks Trump for giving them a much needed kick in the pants.

There’s a little truth in everything an accomplished liar says and does.

The Canadian military has been a joke for years.
Their fighter force consists of 40 year old legacy F-18s...not the current E model. They consist of about one U.S. fighter wing.
When they bought the F-18s they were asked if they wanted any spares for attrition. The reply was, no, we'll just get free used ones from the U.S.
When their free fleet of U.S. supplied F-101s were retired, they didn't field defense interceptors

Look at their helicopter procurement issues.

After the end of the Cold War and their NATO requirements in Germany, they pretty much shut down defence.
I don't blame them.....the U.S. will protect them against any major threats, so just keep a token force for appearances and to do UN peacekeeping missions...costs which are reimbursed by the UN.

I'm not sure how low my European governments, facing a real threat from the east will feel about subsidizing Canadian defense just to spite the U.S.

Bull shit, no they don't.

Here’s what’s being considered:

“28 May 2025
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he wants his country to join a major European plan to bolster defences by 1 July.

Speaking to CBC on Tuesday, Carney said he hoped Canada would sign on to ReArm Europe - a plan to dramatically increase defence spending on the continent to in the next five years - in a bid to reduce reliance on the US.

"Seventy-five cents of every (Canadian) dollar of capital spending for defence goes to the United States. That's not smart," Carney told the public broadcaster.”

From a defense standpoint Canada is inseparable from the US. Apparently Carney's globalist mindset has rendered him incapable of reading a map.

Europe is dying so Carney has decided to tie his nation to a dying horse. This is going to cost Canada dearly and all because he doesn't like Trump. Trump will be gone soon enough but the consequences of Carney's decision are going to remain far beyond Trumps tenure.

Although increasing Canada’s NATO contribution will put budgetary and political pressure to reduce domestic spending on social programs, he’s doing the right thing.

Kinda like when the US President enrolls a "gold dome" which requires Canadian participation without involving them in discussions on the topic?

Europe isn't dying.
Carney is making decisions based on US aggression.

Canada, currently, is positioned best in the world in poaching US R&D scientists. And they are rolling out the red carpet. We will likely see technology advances for the country never before seen from them, resulting in private companies.flocking to establish a presence there.

I expect the Canadian currency to make incredible gains this year.
