The 50 Plus Cafe, Pub, All-Nite Greasy Spoon and Dive Bar

So back home after a great week with the children and mt new grandson. Sadly mixing with the great unwashed has left me with a virus that I think is norovirus …. So feeling crap!
Oh, no! Take care and feel better soon!! 🫂
I will prolly take the girls to the local library just to get out of the house.
I love the library!! Any time I find one, my next strategy is to return - as often as I can.
My family still teases me about my first visit to DC over 3 decades ago. 3-day weekend but I managed to find the Library of Congress (LOC) 3 times - yes, twice in one day. It was an awesome weekend - for that and other reasons. :geek: 📚
This needs more than a single-emoji reaction
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

My family has a military service history dating back to the Civil War. My wife’s side has a rich history also. We all came home, except one. I’m remembering all, but especially my great uncle.

Lost over Saint Nazaire France after piloting his B-17 on a bombing run on Nazi sub pens. The last known contact from a sister ship had two engines knocked out and a flight of FW-190’s attacking as the plane straggled. Plane and crew listed as MIA. Most likely crashed into the Atlantic.

I finished Masters of The Air - Donald Miller, this past winter. It specifically talks about this mission on 23 Nov 42. The Luftwaffe changed their tactics to head on attacks because the B-17’s were so well armored…except for the nose guns. Once the new tactic was employed, they started inflicting heavy losses on the fortresses. Unfortunately, one of those was my uncles plane.

May we never forget those that gave all.

A very moving story hump day. Wow. Those guys had balls of steel. Flying giant planes, German fighter planes swarming all over them, 88mm flak being shot at them, keeping the planes super steady so they could drop the bombs.

Damn.

May his soul rest in peace.

In honor my father who was a cook in the Army Air Corps, here is my breakfast cookie recipe. BTW his cookies were better but I don’t have his recipe.

1 egg well beaten
One quarter cup honey
One half cup almond butter
A teaspoon of almond extract
One half teaspoon of baking soda
One cup oatmeal
One third cup each of chopped almonds, coconut, and dried cherries.

Mix well all liquid ingredients
Then add dry ingredients until rather thick
Let sit for 15 minutes
Scoop individual cookies onto parchment paper lined pan
Bake at 350 F for 10 to 15 minutes depending on your oven. Check the edges for browning not burnt.
It makes about 18 cookies.

Both of my parents were Vets. My dad went to Vietnam and was in Saigon during the Tet Offensive. We were lucky he came home; he very nearly didn't.

We honor the courage of all who served,
the sacrifice of those who stood firm,
and the memory of those who gave everything.

When I was going through candidate school, we had several SOF soldiers in our company. A few Rangers also. When we graduated from WOC-A to B, they locked us down. So while the rest of the fort was out on a Sat night hitting the bars, we were confined to our ready room with a couple of pool tables, foozeball and all the Pepsi, Pizza, and Popcorn we could choke down.

We also had a big screen TeeVee…the big plastic projection kind. The movie that night was The Green Beret’s. The SOF guys hogged up the couch right in front. The rest of us noobs were half watching or goofing around on the tables.

If you’ve ever seen the film, it takes a while but John Wayne is the Colonel and comes in later in the film. When that scene came on, JW, walks in the hooch and right on cue, all the Green Beret’s stood up called out, AT EASE! Whipped out their green berets (which had been hidden under shirts or tucked away) placed them on and smartly saluted1 🤣😂.

I didn’t know whether to laugh or join them! Either way, it made an impression on a young candidate. Always had big respect for those guys!
