The EU is a single Market, it's written into its founding documents. Goods and services know no borders within the bloc. When it comes to trading with countries outside of the bloc, it is all done centrally by the commission. In terms of trade, it is one country. You can't make deals with one country any more than an outsider could cut a trade deal with California

True enough and let's add another point. The EU market for China is different than that of the US in terms of goods and services. Yes, there is some overlap of course, but goods manufactured for the US market cannot be diverted to the EU market with any significant margin for success.

True enough and let's add another point. The EU market for China is different than that of the US in terms of goods and services. Yes, there is some overlap of course, but goods manufactured for the US market cannot be diverted to the EU market with any significant margin for success.

A lot of them can, since most electronic goods are DC so just changing the adaptor does the job. However, Europe is never going to absorb the amount that would have been heading for the US. All China has to do is wait, and they know it. They hold a huge amount of US Bonds so they can hold that over Trump. They will divert finishing operations to other countries that have more favourable tariffs, but in general, they wait. Their government is not affected by approval ratings. If people get laid off and fall into poverty, it doesn't matter to them.
However, the longer the US remains in isolation, the harder it will be to get back. We saw this after the last Trump presidency, America's share of world trade went down. Countries that have applied reciprocal tariffs will now look to source the things they got from the US from other countries. Canada will soon be in a position to export liquefied natural gas, and Australia can make up any shortfall in coking coal and iron ore. Once you have destroyed a relationship it's very hard to get it back.
