Sex & Shenanigans

Speaking of birthdays …. Do you have a favourite birthday you’ve celebrated so far in your life?

Why was it your favourite?

Was it a good party?
Did you get an amazing gift?
Did you travel somewhere?

Not really, I kind of hate birthday celebrations. I beg my family to just let me exist and not make a big deal, but they all want to make a grand production of it.

For my 16th birthday I got these low rise jeans with leather lace up cutouts on the hips that I saw at Hot Topic and wanted so badly.
In the back pocket of those jeans was a pair of tickets for my mom and I to go see RENT in New York with two of the original cast members (Mark & Roger). Then the pants started ringing and I found a cell phone in the other pocket.

I utterly adore the Hot Topic part of that story. The image of you shopping for clothes surrounded by Slipknot incense holders, black light posters , and crappy "goth" plastic jewelry, then finding the perfect jeans is my favorite....

For my 18th birthday, my best friend’s parents were out of town. I have a summer birthday and we had just graduated high school. We threw a 3 day house party. It was epic. Soooo many Jell-O shots. Topless dancing in the rain. All the fun stuff.

Until the 3rd night when someone came and ruined the rest of my summer by letting out the secret that my best friend slept with my high school crush. I had been crushing so hard on him for a couple years and our other friend was dating him. It broke up the friend group completely.
She’s still my best friend and we were each other’s maid of honors at our weddings. That’s maybe the only fight we’ve ever been in.

I love everybody else's birthdays. Gifts are one of my love languages. For myself, I prefer to do something that makes me happy, but I hate other's feeling obligated or pressured to do anything.

My mom's bday falls around Mother's day so I try to do stuff for her all month.

I remember getting a CD player/radio and a collection of CDs in a little holder case for my 18th birthday. For my 28th I made chocolate martinis. For my 44th birthday I had a free Starbucks Frappuccino and a muffaletta (I ended up eating at home) while waiting in the airport terminal to fly back home after visiting New Orleans for the first time.

Well... my favorite birthday was spelled correctly, but wasn't my birthday. For my late wife's 50th birthday, we spent two weeks driving from just north of San Francisco up to Astoria, Oregon (the northern most point of Oregon, on the coast). We had no schedule, no plans, just drove when we wanted, stopped when we wanted, enjoyed just the two of us being together. Is was beautiful. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

I wanted to do the same thing when I turned 50, over 10 years later... but it was not to be.
