while it still exists, plans on starting collection on student loans in default up to and including garnishment of wages.

Now that's accountability!!!!

Biden attempted student loan forgiveness.

Is this administration's policy simply to reverse everything from the last one?

Ok, so they could just declare bankruptcy and they wouldn’t have to pay back the loan.
You’re still not seeing the irony.
Yes Spidey, if you can’t pay your student loan debts and any other debts, you should file for bankruptcy.

Student Loan debt survives bankruptcy.
You're still liable for them, bankrupt or not.
Unlike Trump's bank loans (or virtually any other sort of loan for that matter).

We can see why you couldn't afford California.
I sure don’t miss those punitive income taxes and am grateful Prop 13 is still protecting my CA property tax rates. If you live there and pay taxes (highly doubtful), thanks for picking up the tab.

The defaults on student loans, bankruptcies, etc, resulting from DonOld’s draconian policies will be a further drag on the economy and a strain on the financial sector at a critical moment for the American economy.

🤬

Part of the rationale for President Biden forgiving student loan debt was to reduce jolts to an already fragile economy that were resulting from draconian student loan repayment policies. Even the limited success President Biden achieved with his student loan forgiveness policies was beneficial to students AND the economy.

👍

🇺🇸

Meanwhile:

It can easily be argued that the economy is more fragile than ever at the moment, and these sudden changes to student loan repayment requirements will only increase the likelihood of a major recession / depression.

🤬

And then there’s this:

🤔

So, yes, an individual can get relief from student loan debt through bankruptcy- but it is NOT good for the economy if millions of students with crushing debt are FORCED to go that route. Unfortunately, with the latest draconian action from this racist, fascist, ignorant administration, I suspect thing are going to escalate quite rapidly, thus adding to the current economic crisis that DonOld created.

🤬

We. Told. Them. So.

Linda McMahon: Accountability Returns to Student Loans
We’re ending a Covid-era deferment plan that Biden kept in place far too long.

President Biden never had the authority to forgive student loans across the board, as the Supreme Court held in 2023. But for political gain, he dangled the carrot of loan forgiveness in front of young voters, among other things by keeping in place a temporary Covid-era deferment program. Thus the Education Department allowed students to rack up a massive debt that is now long past due.

Between 2021 and 2024, federal student-loan debt increased by more than $60 billion a year, while the department manipulated repayment plans and forgiveness policies until only 38% of the student-loan portfolio was in repayment. This is unsustainable for both students and taxpayers.

I am announcing the end of this dishonest and irresponsible policy. We will conform the department’s repayment options to federal court decisions and end the Biden-era practice of zero-interest, zero-accountability forbearances that are pushing borrowers into loan delinquency and default. On May 5, we will begin the process of moving roughly 1.8 million borrowers into repayment plans and restart collections of loans in default. Borrowers who don’t make payments on time will see their credit scores go down, and in some cases their wages automatically garnished.

Best part is that you can't file bankruptcy to avoid repayment of student loans.

Best educational financial decision you can make is to pay your own way through college.
