California is negotiating side deals to exempt the state from Trump’s tarriffs

https://ktla.com/news/california/ne...rtners-to-exclude-state-from-retaliation/amp/

Let Trump crash the economy for the rest of the country. California will keep trading with the world.

It may yield some positive result/s.

👍

It’s also a nakedly political attempt by Newsom to position himself for 2028. (See also: Newsom’s "controversial" pod cast comments / appearances.)

I don’t really have a problem with it, as Newsom is at least putting himself out there on some key issues. Newsom is acting like a front-runner.

Will it pay off???

🤔

NO IT WONT. Federal Laws Trump State Laws and that includes the scumbags in Cali
Untrue, there a many laws at the federal level that aren’t enforced or followed by states. Pot is illegal at the federal level yet there are a dozen or so states that have legalized pot. Assisted suicide is illegal at the federal level yet perfectly legal in Oregon. So, you’re incorrect and clearly stupid.

Newsome has destroyed paradise. I hope every homeless drug addict in america shows up in LA for all the free stuff, that asshole throw s out.

California's open to join Canada....pretty sure Mexico would say the same...."let that sink in"....*chuckles*

California can cut all the side deals it wants but federal tax laws apply in all 50 states. If you’re importing goods subject to federal tariffs into any state in the country, you have to pay the federal tax. There isn’t an opt out option.

He never said he was. He asked for the reciprocal tariffs not be applied to California exports. I think that's the first step in succession from the Union. With the 5th largest economy in the world, California doesn't need the USA, the USA needs California...

“secession” is the word you were looking for.

👍

But, yeah, BabyBoobs doesn’t know what the fuck they’re talking about.

Governor Newsom is positioning himself and Californian for the future.

We could POSSIBLY see China adopting an approach similar to Canada, where the products that are subjected to tariffs are primarily limited to "red states". Unfortunately, a fuckton of decent, intelligent Democrats, etc, also live and work in those "red states", so any excessive tariffs / retaliatory tariffs will hurt a fuckton of good people.

😑

🤬

We. Told. Then. So.

The governor can hope and pray, but CA will not be exempt from reciprocal tariffs and there is zero chance of CA seceding from the Union. There was an effort by a fringe organization to do that in 2018 but they couldn’t even muster enough signatures to place the question on the ballot.

Gov. Nuisance and his political rope-a-dopes. Amazingly the citizens keep falling for his shit.

It's not 2018....

Well, yeah, so long as there is an explicit federal law on the books that would
restrict a state from doing business overseas.

It is all a bit dumb. A country under tariff just funnels their stuff through country not under tariff, and it gets exported to America anyway.

What Trump needs to do is focus on carrots and sticks on American companies with overseas factories to bring those jobs back to America. Not going to be quick, easy or cheap.

So, not tarriffs, but taxes. If you don't make your products in America, from American materials, Trump taxes the living fuck out of you.

W
Totally agree.

The large corporations of the world can easily pivot via subsidiaries and trade with non-tariffed countries- hopefully there is a backstop in place for those countries that do not have tariffs.

I think the tarriff idea makes sense theoretically long-term to bring more jobs state-side. I think Trump really wants to turn the screws, he should restrict tourism to Mexico and other LATAM countries that aren’t playing fair with their immigration controls. That will get EVERYONE including the cartels (who own equity in the tourism trade) to blunt the illegal immigration luxury tours they have set up. I doubt Mexico/DR/others want to become Cuba.

Also - Cali is not going to succeed in superseding federal law by trading “around” the national tariffs. This is a pretty asinine idea and really there JUST to get the idiots on both sides of the aisle riled up. Politicians are such whores.

Did you just suggest that the largest state in the US which relies upon federal subsidies just to stay afloat will secede? Not sure what you’re smoking but send it my way please.

And, CA will lose 90% of its value in a MONTH if the secession idea becomes a zygote let alone a full blown concept that is considered. The first people to leave will be your taxpayers and your realtors. Good luck renaming California to Compton.
