In News That Will Shock You to the Core......Only Two out of 26 Gripen Fighters Airworthy in South African Forces:

Only Two out of 26 Gripen Fighters Airworthy in South African Forces: South Africa is one of a number of JAS 39 Gripen fighter jet operators, and a unique one at that because it's the only nation to have almost the entire Gripen fleet unflyable. Only 2/26 Gripens in service with the South African Air Force (SAAF) can take off, and it's only part of the broader issue: on paper, the country has as many as 330 combat aircraft but only six of them are actually operable. They have only three flyable Hawk trainers out of 24 they have in the Air Force. (What's the other one that can still fly? A Cessna?). Ahhhhh, it's helicopter. Scary stuff,

The picture is even more grim in the helicopter fleet. Only one among 39 existing Oryx helicopters (licensed version of Puma) can take off; 0/39 Rooivalk attack helicopters, and zero for all other rotorcraft, too.

Fascinating. Rghis was a country that was historically subject to an international arms embargo imposed against them for nefarious reasons, which meant that the SAAF was unable to procure modern fighter aircraft, and as a result went ahead and BUILT the Cheetah derivative of the IAI Kfir (The Cheetah was a major upgrade of the French-built Dassault Mirage III the SAAF already had). The Cheetah's were really good but the Gripen's replaced them. The South Africans also designed and built the Rooivalk, a highly advanced attack helicopter based in part of the Aérospatiale SA 330 Puma which South Africa already had (as the Oryx). Denel sought to provide a rotorcraft that would be amongst, even potentially superior to, the best attack helicopters in the world.

What changed???????? From a country that could design and build leadimg-edge fighters and attack helicopters to one that can't even keep existing aircraft in the air and operable. Wakanda, we have a real problem.

Mind you, this is also a country where you could visit Cape Town (up until a few years ago) and fly any of three English Electric Lightnings, three BAe Buccaneers, and seven Hawker Hunters, so it's not like the skills to keep these aircraft flying aren't there. MInd you, this is also the country with a Navy which had a submarine commander washed off the sub and drowned a couple of years ago. And that's where the submarines don't run into the ocean floor.....As of 2024, none of the South African submarines are seaworthy. As of 2024, only one of the South African Navy's four frigates remain operational. Oh deary deary me. Whatever happened?

As for the Army......they couldn't run a party in a whorehouse....

Is South Africa likely to have to fight anybody in the foreseeable future?

They are now, in whatever the Congo is called these days, against the M23 Rwanadan-backed paramilitary group. They took a pounding in Goma when they tried to hold the city against M23.

The defense of Goma was poorly coordinated. The entities entrusted with defending the city were the Congolese Army (FARDC), Romanian mercenaries, and UN Peacekeepers bolstered by South African troops under the Southern Africa Development Council (SADC). Things unraveled quickly, and within one week, M23 was in control of Goma. FARDC suffered serious losses, several UN Peacekeepers (mostly from South Africa) were killed, and hundreds of Romanians were captured and repatriated to their home country by Rwanda. The SANDF base at Sake was surrounded and running out of ammunition with little chance of resupply or extraction because the M23 forces were able to easily shoot down resupply helicopters with surface-to-air missiles (SAMs). Sounds like they either pulled out or urrendered but can't find anything expicit. Either way they were fucked over and had no sir support (because their air force can't fly.....)

This one below is from 4 days ago. The M23 rebels in control of key areas of eastern Congo agreed Friday to a ceasefire with African coalition peacekeepers who have announced their withdrawal even as the conflict between the insurgents and Congo ‘s government continues. The rebels and troops from the South African Development Community, or SADC, said in a joint news release that they would work together to rebuild the airport in the eastern hub of Goma, which was damaged when rebels took over, so that the SADC troops could depart the country in an orderly way.

The force of several thousand peacekeeping troops from South Africa, Malawi and Tanzania had been sent to eastern Congo by the SADC in 2023 to help the Congolese government pacify a mineral-rich region plagued by various insurgencies. The troops failed to stop the lightning assaults starting in January by the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels that have claimed several key cities and that left several peacekeepers dead, eroding support for the mission in the donor countries. The SADC leadership announced their withdrawal earlier this month.

The old South African Army would have eaten everyone's lunch before breakfast.....this was just pathetic.

There's a huge war been going on in the Congo (pick your own name) for a couple of decades now. It's involved juat about every player in Africa at one time or another and everyone except the Tutsi's have been burnt. The Tutsi's fight a good war and they're probably the best, as well as motivated. As you are when you're the victim of genocide......

I hope you are not suggesting that is because the old army was all-white.

Of course he is.

The Musk administration has made racist commentary on South Africa official policy. The new US ambassador to South Africa supported apartheid.

God forbid I would EVER suggest something so politically incorrect. A lot of the old South African Army were black too. I'm afraid tho that I will have to leave you to work out that one for yourself.

Wakanda is mainly black people and is fictional.

South Africa is mainly white people and home to the current US president.

Geography, race, and reality matter my mans!

Wakanda is the most scientifically advanced, high-tech country in the world.

But they're so primitive politically that the throne can be won in a duel!

Is this what "Afrofuturism" is all about?!

I don't know for sure, but I would speculate that all the officers were white.

Like in the U.S. Army during the Civil War.

I heard the situation described by someone who was there around 25 years ago: the South African government is modelled on Chicago machine politics. There is more downhill to go before it hits bottom, drops the last of the imported customs, and starts becoming more African.

Well, democracy is also imported.

It takes a special kind of RW asshole to regret the end of Apartheid.

Please stop pussyfooting with this member’s clearly observable overt racism. I’m disgusted even commenting on this fucking thread!

So aside from who is running the country, what has changed?

So, what is the cause?
Same as the cause of SA's crime problem: When Apartheid ended, it was necessary for obvious reasons to disband all the police forces -- and then they had to be rebuilt from the ground up, and were not immediately as effectual as the old forces.

Who took control of the country after Apartheid up till now?

ANC= Marxists, the most incompetent people on earth.
No, they're not. The Communists are Marxists. They're a separate party. They are part of the governing coalition, but only as a junior partner -- they have never had enough power to nationalize any industry or anything.

Good job here calling BS to RG!

The ANC has Marxist roots and maintains alliances with socialist organizations, it governs as a broad-based party with a mix of socialist and capitalist policies rather than as a purely Marxist party. Its policies today are more pragmatic and populist rather than strictly ideological. Yet they have no problem with supporting the elimination of all white people in South Africa.
