Trump fucks up again. Ukraine negotiation goes sideways

Actually, this is very true. America signed the Budapest Agreement guaranteeing Ukraine's borders. Russia invaded and seized Crimea and the Donbas. America did nothing. Russia invaded in 2022. America provided weapons and is now pushing to sign over more of Ukraine to Russia. Without security guarantees.

Trump says he trusts Putin. Fine. Trump wont ne President in 2028 and there are no security guarantees and Putin invades again.

Ukraine would have to be suicidal to sign any agreement on that basis.

Nope, better to keep fighting for another 2 years and bring Russia down. And take back ALL the occupied territories.

Trump has not yet realized he has become either an obstacle or irrelevant to the Russia-Ukraine War as far as Ukraine is concerned.

<blowhard tweet snip>
There is no mining company in the world willing to invest time, money and people in an area subject to Russian invasion without absolute guarantee of safety for investment. The capitulation agreement being pushed by Don Cheetolini does not contain any such guarantee, which is why the Ukraine rejected it,

I get that you don’t like Trump or Rubio and you have no substantive comments on what the secretary said. Good job.

Dems are an evil despicable bunch; It appears democrat senator Murphy talked Zelensky into not signing the agreement. Zelensky had no intention of signing the agreement. If this is true don't expect Trump to ever work with Zelensky.

America Is Gone – Europe Must Replace It

Sierakowski, Sławomir. “America Is Gone – Europe Must Replace It.” German Council on Foreign Relations. March 2025.

Donald Trump and JD Vance’s verbal assault on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office was shocking but not surprising. As the Trump administration rapidly destroys America’s credibility and international standing, Europe must mobilize its ample resources to replace America as a global leader. Donald Trump and JD Vance’s verbal assault on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office will mark February 28, 2025, as an infamous moment in American and world history. The United States is rapidly destroying its good name and alienating everyone except the world’s most brutal dictators. The damage to America’s credibility and reputation will take decades to repair – and may be irreparable. More broadly, with the end of the postwar US-centered international order, we are witnessing the collapse of any global authority. As rogue states seek to capitalize on the chaos, Europe must step up and assume the role once played by the US. That starts by fully supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression....

This line of thought seems to be where Europe is now going. Another indicator that while the USA is important, Trump and Vance are, in the eyes of Europe, sidelining the USA and Europe is taking this seriously and stepping up. As for defense capabilities, Germany’s industrial base is sufficient to arm the continent, while France and Britain’s nuclear umbrella can replace America’s.....

Zelensky looks to be considering freezing the US out of the peace process, with the EU and Turkey taking the role of mediators instead. Quite right. If the US isn't prepared to help Ukraine in any practical way then it's not much use to anyone. Given Trump is actively siding with Putin, far better to just sideline him.

As nice a summary as I have read anywhere.....

Collapse of Trump's Pipe-Dreams

by Benjamin Cook

US Oval Office Now a Russian Fighting Position Used to Ambush Ukraine.

Donald Trump and his team have repeatedly claimed they can bring peace to Ukraine—first within 24 hours of being elected, then 24 hours after inauguration, then within 100 days, and now within six months. Each revision signals an underlying problem: Trump’s confidence in his ability to negotiate peace does not align with reality. His rhetoric, once a political asset, is now exposing a fundamental weakness.

Trump’s team met with Russian officials, expecting to lay the groundwork for a deal. Instead, they encountered Putin’s unwavering maximalist demands: Ukraine must surrender, and the West must retreat. There was no room for negotiation, no back-channel diplomacy, no off-ramps. Putin is keeping Trump "on hold," using the illusion of potential peace to stall and manipulate. While Trump postures as a deal-maker, Russia is playing a different game—one that Trump does not control.

Ukraine is the only one fighting and dying for Europe, democracy, and the rules based order we rely on. Where is the gratitude from the US?

Frustrated and unable to influence Putin, Trump and his team pivot to pressuring Ukraine instead. They ambush President Zelensky, hoping to strong-arm him into concessions that would align with Russia’s demands. This maneuver serves two purposes: first, it provides Trump and his team with an "out"—allowing them to shift blame onto Zelensky for the inevitable failure of their so-called peace deal. This is reinforced by Senator Lindsey Graham’s immediate rush to the microphones to support this narrative following the Oval Office ambush. Second, it increases pressure on Ukraine to yield to Russia’s demands. However, Ukraine, having fought for its survival for years, will not capitulate.

The optics of this strategy are disastrous—not just for Trump, but for the United States.

The world watches closely. Instead of projecting strength, the U.S. appears desperate and ineffective. Ukraine remains resolute, Russia remains aggressive, and Trump’s much-touted negotiating prowess is revealed as empty bluster. Instead of resolving the war, he has showcased America’s diminished credibility. His failure to move Putin exposes him as weak, and his attempts to impose Russia’s will on Ukraine backfire spectacularly. In the end, the only power suffering a public humiliation is not Ukraine, nor even Russia, but the United States itself.

When I was a kid the office of The President of the United States meant something. It was an honour and a solemn duty. We may not always have agreed with what they did and in the UK we might have thought some decisions were crazy but the job itself meant something.
Now all I can see is that once fine position being dragged through the mud.
I find it a sad and terrible thing. Worrying too
