I was introduced to Google Chat and it's wonderful. It allows for video calls, normal text, built in audio recording (limited to 3 min clips), it stores all media shared, if you have that level of trust with your partner, it works across all platforms (Android, iOS, computers, etc.), and it doesn't count towards your Google storage limits.
