The Democrats do not meet that test. They give lip-service to labor, but on balance, they are almost as wholly owned by Wall Street as the Republicans.

If the Dems were a leftist party, Sanders would have been the presidential nominee at some point.

Not that even Sanders is all that leftist. At any rate he is not a socialist, though he calls himself one. He's a left-progressive social democrat -- meaning a vigorous welfare state and a redistributive tax system, WITHIN CAPITALISM. Nationalizing the means of production is not on the agenda.

The same applies to those few Dems such as AOC who are members of the Democratic Socialists of America. Not really a leftist organization in any revolutionary sense.

This is dumb. Parties ebb and flow between moderate and extreme all the time. They can be called leftists or rightists when they drift too far outside of the middle because that's the definition of both

There was a time in America when slavery abolitionism was a radical fringe position -- but that did not make the abolitionists leftists.
